There are two primary locations in which the Cardwell family first became established in the Americas. The vast majority of reseach has been on the branches that settled in colonial Virginia, but there are a substanial number of Cardwells that stem from the New England branch of the family. They appear, on the most part, to descend from William Cardwell of Connecticut. William Cardwell served during the French and Indian War in 1st Regiment, 8th Company in 1761 according to Connecticut Soldiers, French & Indian War, page 249.

William Cardwell married Dorcas Horskins on 19 January 1738 in New London, Connecticut.
