William Cardwell ~ Revolutionary War Soldier ~                          of Culpeper County, Virginia & Bullitt County, Kentucky
by Rand Cardwell - 11Dec2006

William Cardwell was born between 1758 and 1760 in Virginia according to the records contained in his Revolutionary War Pension Application. Little is known about his life in Virginia or even the names of his parents. Research is pointing towards a possible connection with the Cardwell family of Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, Virginia. Click here for an article concerning those groups. He appears to have lived in Culpeper County, Virginia prior to migrating to Kentucky. According to statements concerning John Cardwell, William’s son, William came to Kentucky in 1796 and initially settled in Mercer County. He was in Bullitt County, Kentucky by 1820 when he is found on the census. There is evidence that indicates that William Cardwell married a daughter of Keene Field of Culpeper County, Virginia. Abraham Field, a soldier in the Revolution and father of Joseph and Rueben Field who accompanied Lewis and Clarke on their famous expedition, settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky as early as 1784.  On June 4, 1825 William Cardwell made the following deposition in regards to Abraham Field: “I have been aquatinted with him (Abraham Field) ever since 1776. I married his sister.” It is unfortunate that he did not state her name, but that evidence clearly states that William Cardwell married the sister of Abraham Field, they being the children of Keene Field.  Coupled with the fact that William Cardwell is known to have been in Culpeper County, Virginia after the Revolutionary War. Culpeper County being the home of Abraham Field prior to his move to Kentucky.  William’s son, John Cardwell, states that he was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. It is therefore assumed that William Cardwell married Famariah Field in Culpeper County, Virginia. It is possible that Famariah was a second marriage, but no record is known to support that theory. Famariah has been attributed the last name of Hughes by researchers in the past, but no documentation has been found to support that claim.

There appears to have been a number of Culpeper County Virginians that migrated to the frontier of Kentucky in the late 1700s. Leading the group was Benjamin Field who settled at the Falls of the Ohio in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1780. Lewis Field settled in the Kentucky by 1784, followed by Abraham Field, Henry Field and Rueben Field. They were all from Culpeper County, Virginia. Henry Field of Culpeper County, Virginia, an apparent cousin of Abraham Field, married an unknown Cardwell. That marriage, according to Field researchers, occurred around 1780 in Culpeper County, Virginia. See the Revolutionary War Pension records of Henry Field (W.8811) In the application Henry Field states that his first wife was Miss Cardwell. Field family researchers have stated that her name might have been Elizabeth, which will be assumed in this sketch. Henry Field and Elizabeth Cardwell reportedly had one child. A son named, James Lewis Field, who was born in 1783.  Henry remarried to Susannah Waller Withers around 1789. They migrated to Bullitt County, Kentucky, the same county that William Cardwell migrated to, and Henry died there in 1823. Henry Field was born in 1755 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was a dispatch rider for Patrick Henry during the Revolutionary War. He was married to unknown Cardwell, possible Elizabeth, in about 1780.  James Lewis Field, son of Henry Field and Elizabeth Cardwell served in the War of 1812 and lived in Jefferson County, Kentucky. This unknown Cardwell, possible Elizabeth, is probable the sister of William Cardwell. Additionally, the given names of Lewis and Benjamin, names of children of William Cardwell, are common in the Field lines out of Culpeper County, Virginia, and rarely found in the Cardwell family. More research is needed on this line and this information is added for research purposes only.

On August 20, 1819 William Cardwell appeared before Bullitt County, Kentucky Court in an attempt to gain a pension for his service during the Revolutionary War.  Revolutionary War Pension Record # W.8590. He was 59 years old at the time of the application. That makes him being born around 1760.  According to the application, William Cardwell enlisted for service in September 1780 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, near the City of Fredericksburg.  He was initially attached to Captain Crane and was under the regiment of Col. Campbell. His first enlistment was for eighteen months, but in June 1781 he was granted permission to enlist in the cavalry by his commanding officer.

In June 1781 he enlisted in Peedee, South Carolina in a Company of Captain Ambrose Gordon. They were attached to the 3rd Regiment of Dragoons of the Virginia Line under Col. George Baylor and Lt. Col. William Washington. William Cardwell served with this unit until June 12, 1783. He was discharged by Captain Robert Monroe, by order of General Daniel Morgan, near Winchester, Virginia.

Affidavit from Charles Neal - #W.8590 – August 20, 1819. “Charles Neal, aged about 58, declares that he belonged to Col. Washington’s regiment of light dragoons. William Cardwell enlisted for the war in 1781 and served until discharged at the same time as Neal, 12 June 1783.” Charles Neal’s affidavit confirms the enlistment of William Cardwell in the Cavalry of Col. Washington. It also establishes the exact date of discharge of service. On September 17, 1829 John Jacob gives another affidavit from his home in Scott County, Kentucky. In it he states that William Cardwell was a Sergeant in the 3rd Regiment of the Light Dragoons.”

Affidavit from John Jacobs - #W.8590 – August 20, 1819. “John Jacobs declares William Cardwell was a soldier in the 3rd Virginia Regiment of Light Dragoons commanded by Lt. Col. William Washington and served upwards of eighteen months.”

William Cardwell returns to Bullitt County, Kentucky Court on September 25, 1820. He states the following: “William Cardwell, of said county, aged 61, declares he entered Capt. Harris’ company in 1780 and served nine months in the 8th Regiment commanded by Col. Campbell.  In 1781 he went to South Carolina and on the Peedee enlisted during the war under Capt. Robert Morrow who was attached to the light dragoons service commanded by Lt. Col. William Washington, in which regiment was Maj. Call. He was discharged at Kerns Town in July 1783.” It appears that the government had not accepted his initial application and that he was attempting to provide additional information. The same record states that “He (William Cardwell) owns one bed, one cow, one horse, twelve head of hogs, one kettle, one oven, one loom, five chairs, one tea kettle, two axes, one weeding hoe, valued at $66.25. His wife is aged 61 and he has living with him two children. He had in all nine children, five sons and four daughters. Five are married.” This information is important in establishing that number of children of William and Famariah Cardwell. It also gives some insight into his material assets, which is fairly bleak in comparison to today’s standards. “He (William Cardwell) was in the Battle of Guilford under Col. Campbell in the company of Capt. Crane and was founded by a fresh wound in the leg.” This tidbit of information is interesting in that it places William Cardwell at the Battle of Guilford and that he was wounded in combat during that engagement.

William Cardwell returns to court in Franklin County, Kentucky on October 14, 1833. He states that he is 75 years old and that he enlisted in September 1779 under Col. William Campbell.  That in January 1780 he enlisted as a Sergeant in Captain Morrow’s Company of Light Dragoons and served until June 1, 1783. He was discharged at that point and “landed at his brother’s house in Culpeper County on 6 June 1783”. This record is when William Cardwell is applying for a Land Warrant in Franklin County, Kentucky. It is not clear if he received the land or not. Additional research is needed.

Affidavit from John Story - #W.8590 – October 21, 1833 Anderson County, Kentucky. “John (x) Story declares he served with William Cardwell in the 3rd Virginia Regiment of Light Dragoons under Col. William Washington at the Battle of Cowpens, Guilford Court House, Camden and some skirmishes Cardwell was promoted to sergeant.” This affidavit is important in establishing that William Cardwell fought in three major engagements in the Southern Campaign during the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Cowpens, Guilford Court House, and Camden (also known as Gate’s Defeat) were instrumental to the outcome of the Revolution.  The other “skirmishes” that Story refers to were probably some of the numerous actions of the Dragoons against the British supply lines and rear areas that were conducted in North and South Carolina. Additional research into the unit actions of Col. William Washington’s Light Dragoons should shed some light on these engagements.

Famariah Cardwell appears before the Bullitt County, Kentucky Court on March 11, 1839. She declares that she was married to William Cardwell in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1781. She also states that “some years ago her son William Cardwell tore out from the Bible nearly all of the record evidence of marriages and births.” This statement establishes William Cardwell as a son of William and Famariah Cardwell. It also places William and Famariah Cardwell in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1781 at the time of their marriage. Famariah Cardwell continues, “She had eleven children: 1. Nancy, now widow of Nicholas Brown; 2. Elizabeth, now widow of Robert Shirley; 3. Benjamin, dead; 4. Lewis, recorded in Bible as born 25 Dec. 1785, dead; 5. William; 6. Susan, wife of Joel W. Hundley; 7. Jane, married William Kirk and is dead; 8. George; 9. John; 10. Mary, married Willis Watson; 11. Edmund, recorded in the Bible as born 1 Nov. 1801, dead. John Casey and Phillip Yancey of Franklin Co., Ky., and John Story, somewhere in Kentucky, could prove her marriage if living.” This provides a positive list of the children of William and Famariah Cardwell. Some of the records of dates of birth are missing due to William having destroyed that part of the Bible record. It would appear that Famariah Cardwell listed the children in the order of birth.

William Cardwell, son of William and Famariah Cardwell, appears in Bullitt County, Kentucky Court with his mother on March 11, 1839. His record states, “William Cardwell, aged 51 on 10 April 1838, declares he is the fifth child of William and Famaria Cardwell.  He lists the eleven children of his parents given above. The family Bible had been in his possession since the death of William Cardwell. Many years ago, with a view that he might make himself of age sooner than the record showed, he tore out the leaf containing the record of marriages, ages, etc., in the Bible. William Cardwell died 1 March 1828." This account establishes the birth date of William, son of William and Famariah Cardwell, as April 10, 1787. It also accounts for the reason that he destroyed the records in the family Bible.

Additional family data is contained in the same Bullitt County, Kentucky record. “Lewis Cardwell the son of William Cardwell & Famariah Cardwell was born the 25th Decem. 1785. Edmund Cardwell the Son of the above was born the 1st of Nov 1801. Lewis Cardwell the Son of the aforesaid Departed this life the 31st of October 1832 aged 47. Edmund Cardwell the foresaid Departed this life the 26th Oct. 1832 aged 31.” This record gives the birth and death dates of Lewis and Edmund Cardwell, sons of William and Famariah Cardwell. Lewis Cardwell was born on December 25, 1785 and died on October 31, 1832. Edmund Cardwell was born on November 1, 1801 and died on October 26, 1832.

Famariah Cardwell returns to Bullitt County, Kentucky Court on March 11, 1839 and declares that she is the widow of William Cardwell. That they were married in 1781 and that he died on March 1, 1828. On July 16, 1839 the Clerk of Culpeper County, Virginia reports that there is no record of the marriage of Famariah Cardwell and William Cardwell. Famariah Cardwell applies for a continuance of pension on April 22, 1843 in Bullitt County, Kentucky. George Cardwell of Louisville, Kentucky gives power of attorney to prosecute the pension claim of his father, William Cardwell, on December 26, 1849.

In Jefferson County, Kentucky on July 17, 1851 the Court certifies that Famariah Cardwell, the widow of William Cardwell of Bullitt County, died on May 8, 1843 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  Her surviving children are listed as Elizabeth Shirley, age 76, John Cardwell, age 65, and George Cardwell, age 59. This record establishes the birth years of three more of the children of William and Famariah Cardwell. Elizabeth Shirley was born in 1775 according to that statement, but it must be an error since William and Famariah were not married until 1781. Elizabeth Cardwell, daughter of William and Famariah Cardwell, was probably born in 1785 and the record should state that she was 66 rather than 76.  In an earlier statement, Famariah Cardwell listed her as the second child. John Cardwell was born in 1786 and George Cardwell was born in 1792.

William Cardwell received a pension from the government starting on May 31, 1818 at the rate of $8 per month. After the pension law was changed in the Act of 1832 it was increased to $100 per year. Famariah Cardwell, his widow, was granted a continuance of the pension and received it until her death on May 8, 1843.

There are several different dates of death given for William Cardwell in his Revolutionary War pension records (W.8590).  One is March 1, 1832. Since William Cardwell appeared in Court in Franklin County, Kentucky on October 14, 1833 that appears to be an error. Another record states that William Cardwell died on March 1, 1828 which is again an obvious error.  It would appear that William Cardwell died in 1838 and the handwriting is just difficult to read. It is March 11, 1839 that Famariah Cardwell appears in Bullitt County, Kentucky Court without William. It is concluded that William Cardwell died on March 1, 1838 at 78 years of age.

The Children of William and Famariah Cardwell

1. Nancy Cardwell was born about 1782 probably in Culpeper County, Virginia. She married Nicholas Brown on August 29, 1799 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He had died by March 1839. They might have migrated to Kentucky. There are a number of Nichols Brown families in Kentucky in the 1810 Census. One in Madison County and another in Nelson County. In 1820 there is a Nicholas Brown that is living in Jefferson County, Kentucky. (201101-2101) This line requires additional research.

They initially settled in Mercer County, but William Cardwell, John’s father, eventually moves to Bullitt County, Kentucky. John Cardwell married Margaret Arnold on October 29, 1818 in Franklin County, Kentucky. Margaret Arnold was born in about 1793 in Arnold’s Station in Franklin County, Kentucky. She was the youngest daughter of James Arnold and Ann Berrisford. John Cardwell served in Zachariah Terrell’s Company of Kentucky Militia in War of 1812 and received a pension for his service. From The Register of Kentucky State Historical Society, page 64-65 “James Arnold and his Descendants” by L.F. Johnson – “John Cardwell, who married the youngest daughter of James Arnold, was a soldier in the War of 1812; he lived nearly a century, and gave to his family and friends detailed accounts of many stirring events which took place during those troublous times…”.  From The History of Franklin County, Kentucky. Roberts Printing Company, Frankfort, Kentucky (1912), page 51, “Margaret Arnold Cardwell, the youngest daughter of James Arnold, and the wife of John Cardwell, died of cholera at her home opposite the mouth of Glenn’s Creek in August 1833. Tradition of the family say that she was a very handsome woman, and that she was stronger than any ordinary man.” Margaret Arnold Cardwell’s death is proven in the records contained in the pension records of John Cardwell as being in 1833. The link to William Cardwell is proven in the following passage from the same source. “John Cardwell died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William P. Johnson, on September 17, 1879 at the age of ninety-three years. He was born in Culpepper (sic) County, Virginia in the year 1786. His father, William Cardwell, was a native of Virginia. He moved to Kentucky and settled in Mercer County in 1796. NOTE: The information provided in the article is for research purposes only. Please personally research the sources before jumping to conclusions based on this work. This William has not been connected to the family of Thoms Cardwell/Martha Perrin. He appears to connect to the Cardwell family groups of Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, Virginia. More research is needed. If you are connected to this branch of the family please contact me with any corrects. Thank you, Rand Cardwell ~ 12 December 2006
