FAMILY OF JOHN CARDWELL
Perrin Cardwell - oldest son of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe. Born around 1744 in Cumberland County, Virginia. Settled in the Yadkin River Valley Wilderness of North Carolina by 1767. Did not apply for Revolutionary War pension, but is listed in the ranks of the militia that fought at the Battle of King's Mountain. He was under the command of Col. Benjamin Cleveland. Perrin settled in Wilkes County, North Carolina after the war and then migrated to Adair County, Kentucky around 1801. Details in John Cardwell (1715-1795) by Rand Cardwell.
Thomas L. Cardwell - son of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe. Born on September 1, 1745 in Cumberland County, Virginia. Lived in the Wilkes County, NC / Patrick County, VA area. His descendants claim that he served in the Revolutionary War with a brother, but no confirmation has been established. It is possible that he served with his older brother, Perrin Cardwell, in the North Carolina Militia. Details in John Cardwell (1715-1795) by Rand Cardwell.
John Cardwell, Jr. - son of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe. Born in 1748 in either Goochland or Cumberland County, Virginia. He did not apply for a Revolutionary War pension, but did receive a Land Grant in Franklin County, Kentucky for his service. From Old Kentucky Entries and Deeds by Willard Rouse Jillson, page 321 - "John Cardwell with land grant warrant #2421 for a tract of land consisting of 100 acres, dated February 6th, 1784. This land grant as a reward for his three years service in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War." Details in John Cardwell (1715-1795) by Rand Cardwell. Some researchers have confused the Revolutionary War service of this John Cardwell with John Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee.
William M. Cardwell - son of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe. Born around 1752 and settled in Stokes County, North Carolina. He died in 1815 and descendants claim that he served in the Revolutionary War, but no proof has been established. Details in John Cardwell (1715-1795) by Rand Cardwell.

William Cardwell - son of William Cardwell and Elizabeth Burch - Resided in New London County, Connecticut. He served in Capt. Waterman’s Company of the 20th Regiment under Col. Samuel Abbott. Simon Cardwell - ancestry undetermined - Resided in Stonington, Connecticut. He served in the Connecticut Line in the Eldridge Company. Simon enlisted on 20 February 1776 and was discharged on 20 February 1780. There exists the possibility that Simon might have moved to Georgia and is the founder of the majority of the Georgia and Alabama Cardwell Lines. This might be solved if we can find any individuals from the New England branch to take part in the Cardwell DNA Project. No additional information.
Reubin Cardwell - ancestry undetermined - He served in Capt. Roger Welles’ Company. No additional information.
UNKNOWN CARDWELL
William Cardwell - ancestry undetermined - Resided in Culpepper County, VA at time of enlistment. Revolutionary War Pension Application #W.8590. See account at the Battle of Camden website. William moved to Kentucky after the war and lived until his death in 1838. I have a substantial amount of information on him, but have been unable to link him to the Thomas Cardwell/Martha Perrin branch. I currently feel that he descends from the King & Queen County, Virginia Cardwell families. William might be the brother of Lewis Cardwell, veteran of the Rev. War. Isaac N. Cardwell - Son of John Cardwell. Grandson of Rev. Perrin Cardwell - Served in Company G, 5th Infantry of Tennessee Militia. After the Mexican War ended he joined the forces of William Walker in his effort to overthrow the government of Nicaragua. Robert B. Cardwell - ancestry undetermined - Appears on the roster of Company I, 3rd Tennessee Infantry as a Private. Born around 1829. Unit mustered in Sumner Co., TN. This points to association with the Thomas Cardwell of Granville Co., NC branch. More research is needed. His connection to Sumner County, Tennessee places him as a possible son of Nelson Cardwell, he being the son of Thomas Cardwell of Granville Co., NC. Click here for more information.
Robert P. Cardwell - ancestry undetermined - Appears on the roster of Company H, 1st Tennessee Infantry as a Private. Discharged on April 7, 1847 in Vera Cruz, Mexico. More research is needed. There is a Robert Cardwell that is found in California that might be this man.

Grandson of Perrin Cardwell of Wilkes Co., NC - Served as Private in Company “G” of the 14th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA. He saw action at the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern or Pea Ridge, Arkansas on March 6 – 8, 1862, afterwards the regiment moved east of the Mississippi and eventually was surrendered at Port Hudson. Cardwell - Great-grandson of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe - He was born about 1842 in Giles County, Tennessee. He enlisted for service in Company “D”, 3rd Clack’s Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. He rose to the rank of Sergeant before being captured at the fall of Fort Donalson on February 16, 1862. He was sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois and died there on September 4, 1862 as a Prisoner of War. Details in John Cardwell (1715-1795) by Rand Cardwell.
John J. Cardwell - CSA - Brother of Achilles E. Cardwell (see above)- Son of William Sands Cardwell – Grandson of William M. Cardwell - Great-grandson of John Cardwell and Keziah Lowe - He was born about 1846 in Giles County, Tennessee. He enlisted for service in 3rd Clack’s Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in Company “I”, 3rd Clack’s Infantry. It is not known if he lived through the war as there are no known record of him afterwards. William C. Cardwell - CSA - ancestry undetermined - Served in in the 53rd Infantry, CSA from Giles County, Tennessee. Not found after the 1860 census and presumed KIA. Possibly linked to William Sand Cardwell of Giles Co., TN, but no solid proof.

He is still living with his father in the 1860 Coffee County, Alabama census. War Veteran) - GG-Grandson of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand Cardwell - He was born about 1833 in Rockingham County, NC and served as a Private in Company L of the 21st North Carolina Infantry, CSA. James R. Cardwell - CSA - WIA - Brother of William T. Cardwell (see below) - Son of Richard M. Cardwell and Sarah Crowder Cardwell - Grandson of Peter Cardwell and Mary Joyce Cardwell - Great-grandson of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand Cardwell - He was born on September 23, 1837 in Grainger County, TN and served with the 26th Infantry Confederate Army and was wounded by grapeshot during the war. He apparently suffered from those wounds for the rest of his life. Details in Richard Cardwell (1719-1780) by Rand Cardwell.
William T. Cardwell - CSA - POW -Brother of James R. Cardwell (see above) - Son of Richard M. Cardwell and Sarah Crowder Cardwell - Grandson of Peter Cardwell and Mary Joyce Cardwell - Great-grandson of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand Cardwell - He as born in 1841 in Grainger County, TN and served in Company D of the 26th Tennessee Infantry, CSA. He was captured by the Union Army, probably at the surrender of Fort Donalson in April 1862, and sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois POW Camp. He died there on May 19, 1862. Henry C. Cardwell - USA - KIA - Son of Dennis A. Cardwell and Mary Booth - Grandson of William Cardwell (b. 1773 in VA - Unknown line of Cardwell). - He was born circa 1841 in Kentucky and served as a Private in Company B, 6th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, USA. Henry enlisted on Sept. 23, 1861 in Louisville, Kentucky for a period of 3 years. He was 19 years old at the time of his enlistment. Appointed the rank of Corporal on June 4, 1862. KIA at the Battle of Stone River, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, December 31, 1862. Buried in unmarked grave at Stone's River National Cemetery, Stone's River, Tennessee. He is the brother of Dennis A. Cardwell, Jr. listed bellow. This line is being researched by Thomas C. Cardwell and is part of the Cardwell DNA Project.
Dennis A. Cardwell, Jr. - USA - POW - Son of Dennis A. Cardwell and Mary Booth - Grandson of William Cardwell (b. 1773 in VA - Unknown line of Cardwell). - He was born circa 1842 in Oldham County, Kentucky and served as a Private in Company B, 6th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, USA.. He was reported missing in action at the Battle of Chicamauga, Ga. on September 19, 1863. He was taken prisoner by the Confederate forces and was confined at the infamous Andersonville Confederate Prison, September 29, 1863. Paroled at Charleston, South Carolina on December 10, 1864. Furloughed December 28, 1864 for 30 days. Reported at Camp Chase, Ohio on February 3, 1865 and mustered out on February 6, 1865. Resided in Jefferson County, Kentucky after the war. He was the brother of Henry C. Cardwell that is listed above. This line is being researched by Thomas C. Cardwell and is part of the Cardwell DNA Project.
