Vermont Roots of Cardwell Family

NOTE: This information is a work in progress. Please research all the data on your own. As new information is researched it will be added here and increase the overall understanding of this branch of the Cardwell family. Hopefully, by working with numerous Cardwell researchers a much clearer picture will develop on this branch. This process will occur over time. Check back often for updates. I’ve started collecting data on the group of Cardwells that were born in Vermont. I started with the 1850 census.

Unknown Cardwell - He married Abigal LNU. She was born about 1802 in Vermont. Abigal moved to Wisconsin with the majority of her children. They are listed in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Cardwell was born in Ireland according to Jacob Cardwell, their son, in the 1880 census. Abigal is living in the home of her daughter, Mary Jane Cardwell Wiltsle, in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Cardwell and Abigal had the following children:

A. William Cardwell - born about 1820 in Vermont. He married Eliza LNU in about 1848. She was born about 1831 in Canada. They are listed in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. In that record they are living next door to William’s mother, Abigal, and his siblings. They are listed in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. They are living next door to his brother, Jacob Cardwell, in that record. By 1870 they are living in Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota and are listed in the census in that county. His brother, Jacob Cardwell, is living near in that record. They are listed in the 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records. Their son, Charles E. Cardwell, is living near them in that record. William and Eliza had the following children:

i. Charles E. Cardwell - born about 1849 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 and 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Charles married Ettie LNU. She was born about 1861 in New York. They are listed in the 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records. They are living near his parents in that record.

ii. Merritt Cardwell - born about 1853 in Vermont. It appears that his parents, or at least his mother, went back to Vermont for a short period. All the rest of his siblings are listed as being born in Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.

iii. Franklin Cardwell - born about 1855 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota and 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records.

iv. Harvey/Harry Cardwell - born about 1857 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin and 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

v. Myron Cardwell - born about 1859 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota and 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records.

vi. Lucy E. Cardwell - born about 1863 in Vermont. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota and 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records.

vii. Minnie J. Cardwell - born about 1869 in Minnesota. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota and 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records.

viii. Murtah Cardwell - born about 1874 in Martin County, Minnesota. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Owen, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa census records.

B. Jacob Cardwell - born in August 1822 in Vermont. He is listed in the home of his mother in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Jacob married Sarah LNU. She was born about 1828 in Vermont. They are living next to his brother, William Cardwell, in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin and 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records. Wiliam, Jacob’s brother, moves to Iowa between 1870 and 1880, but Jacob and his family stayed in Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota. They are listed in the census of that county for 1880. Jacob states in that record that his father was born in Ireland. They are listed in the 1900 Fairmont, Martin County, Minnesota census record with a grandaughter, Hazel Archer - born in December 1887. Jacob and Sarah had the following children:

i. Walter Cardwell - born about 1854 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1870 and 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

ii. Albert Cardwell - born about 1855 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin and 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

iii. Marcellis Cardwell - born about 1857 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin and 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

iv. Winfield R. Cardwell - born about 1859 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin, 1870 and 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

v. Jenett Cardwell - born about 1861 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

vi. Mary Jane Cardwell - born about 1863 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 and 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

vii. Hannah/Annie Cardwell - born about 1866 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 and 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

viii. Louise Cardwell - born about 1873 in Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

ix. May Cardwell - born about 1878 in Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Lake Belt, Martin County, Minnesota census records.

C, David Cardwell - born about 1826 in Vermont. He is listed in the home of his mother in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.He and his mother are living in the home of his sister, Mary Jane Cardwell Wiltsle, in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. David is single and working as a Lumberman by 1870. He is listed in the 1870 Des Moines, Jackson County, Minnesota census records.

D. Chester Cardwell - born about 1827 in Vermont. He married Angaline LNU. She was born about 1830 in Vermont. They are listed in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. They are living very near Abigal Cardwell and two of his siblings. Chester is not listed in the 1850 census. More research is needed to confirm his association with this family. They are listed in the 1880 North Petersburgh, Rensselaer County, New York census records. Chester and Angaline had the following children”

i. Mary Cardwell - born about 1848 in Vermont. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin and the 1880 North Petersburgh, Rensselaer County, New York census records.

ii. Joseph Cardwell - born about 1858 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.

E. Melvin Cardwell - born about 1830 in Vermont. He is listed in the home of his mother in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.

F. Mary Jane Cardwell - born about 1834 in Vermont. She is listed in the home of her mother in the 1850 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Mary married William W. Wiltsle in about 1855. He was born about 1826 in New York. They are listed in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records. Living with them in that record is her mother, Abigal, and brother, David Cardwell. Mary Jane and William had the following children:

i. Edwin Wiltsle - born about 1856 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.

ii. Alonso Wiltsle - born about 1859 in Dodge County, Wisconsin. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Hustisford, Dodge County, Wisconsin census records.
