5. Macajah D. Cardwell - was born about 1818 in Granville County, North Carolina. Macajah married Fredonia M.M. Belote on 11 December 1841 in Sumner County, Tennessee. There is an interesting case found in the Smith County, Tennessee Chancery Court Minutes between Fredonia M. Cardwell vs. Macajah (sic) D. Cardwell and William N. Cardwell which came to hearing on 12 August 1842. It declares that Fredonia M. and Macajah D. Cardwell were married on 31 December 1841 in Sumner County, Tennessee. [This is close to the date that we have listed on record. See above.] The suit revolves around slaves belonging to Fredonia from a previous husband. Somehow, Macajah’s father and brother became involved and are listed as William N. Cardwell and Leonard H. Cardwell. The suit also mentions that Fredonia and Macajah had a son, John Henry Cardwell. The suit continues until 1848 when she was granted a divorce. He moves west from Sumner County, Tennessee to Weakley County, Tennessee and settles there for the rest of his life. Macajah was elected as State Senator to the 34th Tennessee Confederate General Assembly and served from 1861 to 1863. He represented Henry, Obion, and Weakley Counties, Tennessee. He was an attnorney and practiced in Dresden, Weakley County, Tennessee for more than forty years. Macajah married Polly Ann Hicks on 18 June 1846 in Weakley County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his father in the 1860 Weakley County, Tennessee census records. John H. Cardwell is the son of Macajah and his first wife, Fredonia M. Belote. There is a possibility that John married Amanda Diggs on 03 February 1859 in Henry County, Tennessee. I have yet to group that particular John Cardwell and additional research is needed. What is known is that Amanda is listed as a widow by 1880 and living in Henry County, Tennessee. They had one son, Thomas Archie Cardwell - born about 1871 in Tennessee. He married Mary L. Williams on 15 March 1883 in Henry County, Tennessee and they had several children.
B. Margaret Cardwell - born about 1846 in Tennessee. She is not listed on any census record with Macajah. She was listed on a research letter as one of his children. No data has been found that would confirm this, but given the gap between the year in which Macajah married Polly Ann Hicks (1846) and the year of birth of their known child, Lewis D. Cardwell (1850), it is a possibility. If she was the daughter of Macajah and Polly, she must have died prior to the 1850 census in Weakley County, Tennessee. No additional information.
C. Lewis D. Cardwell - born about 1850 in Weakley County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 and 1860 Weakley County, Tennessee census records.
