Thomas Cardwell, Jr.
of Granville County, NC, Sumner County, TN, and Calloway County, KY
by Rand Cardwell - 14Dec2006

Thomas Cardwell, Jr. -  was the son of Thomas Cardwell and Mary LNU of Granville County, North Carolina. He was listed as one of two guardians of his minor siblings in the 1799 Will of his father. Thomas was born about 1778 in Virginia according to the 1850 Calloway County, Kentucky census. He married Nancy Loyd on 24 December 1801 in Granville County, North Carolina. Nancy died early in their marriage and Thomas remarried to Temperance Lenay on 19 December 1805 in Granville County, North Carolina. Thomas might be listed in North Carolina in the 1810 census of North Carolina at Peters Creek in Surry County, but additional research is needed to be certain. He moves to Sumner County, Tennessee by 02 October 1815 when he witnessed a deed in that county. He is listed on the 1820 Sumner County, Tennessee census with what appears as a possible younger brother, born between 1794 and 1804, and family. He is listed in Sumner County, Tennessee again in the 1830 census. Thomas and several other Cardwells, including several of his children, are listed in the minutes of the Willow Grove Methodist Church in Sumner County, Tennessee on 08 March 1834. Click here for a copy of that record. Thomas is listed as widowed in that record. Temperance Lenay Cardwell, his second wife, died prior to 08 March 1834 in Sumner County, Tennessee. By 1840, he has moved to Calloway County, Kentucky and is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census of that county. It appears from the 1840 census that only one of his sons, Thomas G. Cardwell, and two daughters moved with him to Calloway County. By 1850, his son, William N. Cardwell, joins Thomas in Calloway County.  Thomas Cardwell died in Calloway County, Kentucky in 1853 at the age of 75.

Thomas Cardwell might have served during the War of 1812. In the Muster Rolls of North Carolina Soldiers of the War of 1812 there is a “Thomas F. Cardwell” that served in the 5th Regiment, 2nd Company, Detached form the 1st Orange County, North Carolina Regiment. Additional research is needed, but given the geographic location it is a strong possibility.

In a letter from a fellow Cardwell researcher in 1997, Thomas Cardwell is listed as being married to Nancy LNU. According to the Granville County, North Carolina marriage records, Thomas Cardwell married Nancy Loyd (see above). The children, according to that source, are listed below. [Researching the children from that letter produced results that support the information. I have not checked the Calloway County, Kentucky records for a Will or other supporting documents that could list the children. RC 12/2006]  Listed with Thomas in the 1850 Calloway County, Kentucky census is E.M. Cardwell (female) - born about 1806 in North Carolina. She is assumed to be his daughter considering his 1806 marriage to Nancy Loyd, but her intitals do not match with the list of children provided in the letter. Living next to him is T.G. Cardwell - male - born about 1812 in North Carolina. This appears to be his son, Thomas G. Cardwell. Additional research is needed.

Attempts are made to substaniate the information using census records and various other documentation, but it is likely that there is some degree for error. I will make corrections to the information listed on this website as this research develops.
