Leonard Cardwell - oldest child of Thomas Cardwell and Mary LNU of Granville County, North Carolina. He was born about 1773 in Virginia and is listed as one of two guardians of his minor siblings in the 1799 Will of his father. He married Lucy Strum on 18 December 1802 in Granville County, North Carolina. She was born between 1775 and 1794. Leonard is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Granville County, North Carolina census records. Joseph L. Cardwell, grandson of Leonard, states in 1922 that his grandfather’s home “was log covered with shingles put on with pegs.” Leonard Cardwell died between 1840 and 1850 in Smith County, Tennessee.

2. Buckner S. Cardwell - born about 1809 in Granville County, North Carolina. He and his first wife, name unknown, are listed in the 1840 Smith County, Tennessee census. They have three children in that record. One daughter born between 1830 and 1835; another daughter born between 1835 and 1840; and a son born between 1830 and 1835. She died prior to 01 January 1849, when E. Ameila J. Hogg is listed in the will of her father, David Hogg, in Smith County, Tennessee. Click here for an abstract of that record. She is listed as the wife of “Brickens” (sic) Cardwell. Amela was born about 1836 in Tennessee and was the mother of Buckner’s younger children. She was the daughter of David Hogg and Nancy LNU. Buckner is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Smith County, Tennessee census records. Can not locate in 1870 census. In 1880, he is boarding in the home of Samuel Allison in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed as widowed in that record. Joseph L. Cardwell, oldest son of Buckner, states in 1922 that his father owned 150 acres. Additional research is needed. A. Sarah J. Cardwell - born about 1833 in Smith County, Tennessee. She is listed in the 1840 census of Smith County, Tennessee in the home of her parents. Her mother, name unknown, died prior to 1849 and she is listed with her father and step-mother in the 1850 Smith County, Tennessee census.
B. Joseph Leonard Cardwell - born on 30 September 1835 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1840 Smith County, Tennessee census. His mother, name unknown, died prior to 1849 and he is listed with his father and step-mother in the 1850 Smith County, Tennessee census. In 1860, he is married and living in Macon County, Tennessee and is listed in the census of that county. Joseph served as a 2nd Lt. in the 24th Tennessee Infantry CSA during the Civil War. Joseph is listed in the 1880 Smith County, Tennessee census. His wife, Mary C. Timberlake Cardwell, was born in August 1837 in Tennessee. They are listed in the 1900 Smith County, Tennessee census with daughter, Annie, and her husband, Lee H. Thakston, in their home. In 1910, they are living in the home of their son, William F. Cardwell, in Smith County, Tennessee. They are living with their daughter, Annie Cardwell Thakston, in the 1920 Wilson County, Tennessee census. Joseph and Mary had the following children:

Buckner served in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1911 to 1915 and represented Smith County. He was a Democrat. He attended primary and secondary schools in Elmwood, Smith County, Tennessee. He taught in public schools og Smith County, Tennessee from 1886 to 1887. Buckner was a dealer in leaf tobacco in Elmwood, Smith County, Tennessee. He purchased a farm near Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee and moved there in 1915. He was a member of the Methodist Epicsopal Church and the Knights of Pythias. He died on 14 September 19135 in Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee and is buried in Tullahoma. Leslie married Rosalie Armistead on 03 May 1911. She was born about 1885 in Tennessee. They are listed in the 1920 and 1930 Dona Ana County, New Mexico census in the City of Las Cruces. Living with them in 1930 is Ollie Cardwell, his Step-Mother. The Las Cruces Sun News reported his death on 05 January 1953. “Funeral services for Leslie Alvin Cardwell local real estate man who died suddenly Fri. will be held at Graham's Funeral Home with the Rev. A. C. Douglas will officiate. Mr. Cardwell, former civic leader here, died after two day illness with influenza. Born in Defeated, TN, Sept. 12, 1886. During his early boyhood, he taught school in TN, & later was cashier of the First National Bank, at Carthage, TX for several years. On May 3, 1911 he was married to Miss Roaslie Armistead. Because of Mr. Cardwell's health, the couple soon left for the west, locating in Clayton, NM. In 1913 Mr. & Mrs. Cardwell moved to Mesilla Valley, where for more than 20 years, Mr. Cardwell was in the mercantile business with his father, the late W. T. Cardwell. Robert married Mary P. Cage on 19 February 1876 in Smith County, Tennessee. Mary was born on 27 May 1860 and died on 26 May 1902.
