John G. Cardwell - born about 1783 in Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Cardwell and Mary LNU of Granville County, North Carolina. He is listed a minor (under 21 years of age at the time of his fathers death in 1799) in the 1805 North Carolina Supreme Court Case “Cardwell heirs vs. Brodie”. John moved from Granville County, North Carolina to Smith County, Tennessee by 15 October 1807. He is mentioned in the Smith County, Tennessee Court of Pleas and Quarter on that date at the estate sale of Matthew Harper on that date. John G. Cardwell married Sarah H. Robinson in about 1808 in Smith County, Tennessee. There is no known record of that marriage, but it is based on the birth year of their oldest child. Sarah H. Robinson Cardwell was born about 1790 in Virginia and was the daughter of William Robinson and Frances Winfree. She is mentioned in William Robinson’s Will dated 02 March 1826 in Smith County, Tennessee. John G. Cardwell is listed in the 1830 Smith County, Tennessee census. He is living near his brothers, Anderson Cardwell and Leonard Cardwell.

Thursey was the daughter of Thomas Cardwell, Jr. - brother of her father. B. James M. Cardwell - born about 1834 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is awarded 1/12th share of the estate of John G. The 1840 census finds Thomas Overstreet living next door to John G. Cardwell, but it appears that Emily had died by that date. 4. Frances H. Cardwell - born about 1815 in Smith County, Tennessee. She married Varnel L. Cardwell, son of William N. Cardwell and Anne Lawrence. Frances is mentioned in the will of her father, John G. Cardwell, dated 01 February 1843 in Smith County, Tennessee. Frances died before 21 December 1867 when she is mentioned as deceased in the Smith County, Tennessee Probate Records. Her son, John L.M. Cardwell, listed as blind in that record and the will of John G. Cardwell, his grandfather, receives his share of John G. Cardwell’s estate. 5. Mary “Polly” Ann Cardwell - born about 1818 in Smith County, Tennessee. She married Alfred M. Kemp in about 1840. He was born in September 1817 in Tennessee. Polly Ann is mentioned in the Will of John G. Cardwell dated on 01 February 1843 in Smith County, Tennessee. Alfred Kemp died and Mary Ann remarried to William Riley Gregory. He was born about 1815 in Tennessee and was a school teacher. They move to Saline County, Arkansas in the late 1840’s. They are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Saline County, Arkansas and the 1870 Grant County, Arkansas census records. Living with them in the are Leonidas and Leroy Kemp. They might be sons from her first marriage, but additional research is needed. Mary and William are mentioned in the Smith County, Tennessee Probate Court Records on 01 July 1870. In that record that are stated as living in Grant County, Arkansas and appoint Jenks Kemp, husband of Mary’s sister Aletha, as their attorney in the matter. Wyatt on 09 November 1850 in Sumner County, Tennessee. He died before 01 February 1869 when his minor children are awarded his share of the proceeds of the estate of John G. Cardwell. John’s widow Eliza Jane - born about 1831 in Tennessee, is listed in the 1880 Sumner County, Tennessee census with two grandchildren: Luther Cardwell - born about 1872 in Tennessee and Carry Cardwell - born about 1874 in Tennessee. Their parents are undetermined.. John might have served as a Sergeant in Company H of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment “Bates” CSA in the Civil War. Unit records indicate that a John H. Cardwell died in a hospital in Ocmulgee, Georgia on 13 February 1864. Company H was almost exclusively made up of men from Sumner County, Tennessee. Research on the Cardwell families in the region points to John R. Cardwell, the son of John G. Cardwell, as this man. John R. and Eliza Jane had the following children:

A. Rebecca F. Cardwell - born about 1851 in Sumner County, Tennessee. She married William Franklin in about 1868. William was born about 1838 in Kentucky. She is listed in the 01 February 1869 Smith County, Tennessee Probate records concerning her father’s share of John G. Cardwell’s estate. William is mentioned in the will of his father, John G. Cardwell, dated 01 February 1843 in Smith County, Tennessee. He married Edwardann Jones on 23 December 1851 in Sumner County, Tennessee. (record states E.A. Jones, but later census records lists her as Edwardann.) They are listed in the 1860 Davidson County, Tennessee, 1870 and 1880 Sumner County, Tennessee census records. There is a possibility, given the geographic location in which he lived, that he is the son of Nelson Cardwell, brother of John G. Cardwell. Click here for information on that line. William W. Cardwell is currently listed under both men as a possible son. William is not listed in the 1900 census and might have died between 1880 and 1900. William W. She was born about 1866 in Germany. There is no census evidence that Joseph fathered any children.

Lucy is buried at the Cardwell Cemetery in the 20th District of Smith County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Leonard J. Cardwell and Lockey LNU.
