This is the Cardwell Family Research Center. It is devoted to finding answers to several of the unsolved lines of the family. Additionally, it is a source for researchers to attempt to link into one of the researched branches. There are tons of unsolved mysteries that concern this wonderful family. This site will focus on those hard cases and will be updated on a regular basis.... so check back often!
Hundreds of researchers have contacted me over the last few years with the request of helping them link to the known established lines. I can do this with the vast majority of requests, but there are several lines that still need to be solved and added to the overall Cardwell family database. Current unsolved questions are listed below.
1. Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, NC. - Ok, this line has been on my TO-DO list for several years. Well, I’ve finally got started. Click here for the latest information on ole Thomas of Granville and his numerous descendants. Several of his sons moved to Middle Tennessee, Smith and Sumner Counties to be specific. One of the reasons that I kept putting this one off was the generally confusion of several Cardwell families living in the same general area prior to the 1850 census. This research will be ongoing and take some time to develop a better understanding of the groups and individuals. Check back on a regular basis for new findings. Also, if you have any research that you care to share on any of the Thomas Cardwell of Granville descendants, please contact me. I need all the help that I can get on this one! ~ RC 12/2006
2. Parents of William Cardwell of Bullitt County, KY & the Whole Middlesex County, VA Group - This William appears to link to the Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, VA lines, but I have been unable to make a solid connection. The Middlesex Group has been researched very little in comparison to the family of Thomas Cardwell & Martha Perrin. Click here for an article on the Middlesex and King & Queen County Cardwell Group. Looking for someone to help out with this one.
3. The Children of George Cardwell and Leticia. - I have researched the line of their sons, Perrin Cardwell and John Cardwell, but need help with children William, Thomas, Francis and Richard that stayed in Virginia. Click here for the latest information on the family of John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN. Click here for information on the book about Rev. Perrin Cardwell and his descendants.
4. The parents of Simon Cardwell of Georgia. - Some researchers claim that he is the son of Robert Cardwell of Campbell County, VA. Others state that he is an immigrant from the British Isles. Old-fashioned research has yet to dig up an answer. This is one line that we are agressively seeking a descendant to participate in the Cardwell DNA Project. Many of Simon’s children moved to Alabama. Click here for an article
5. The Robert Cardwell of Campbell County, VA line. - This is another project that I will get to at some point, There has been a fair amount of research on this line, but I feel that it is necessary to re-examine the data for accuracy. Recent findings indicate that Robert’s wife was actually Alice Dixon and not Alice Rucker as has been claimed by others. Dixon is commonly passed down in the families as a middle name. Look for an upcoming article on Robert of Campbell.
6. The York County, VA lines. - Spencer, I told you that I was keeping an eye out for you. We need to link William Cardwell - born in 1814 - of York County, VA to the established Cardwell families in the area if possible.
7. The Unsolved Cardwell Family of Grainger County, TN - I’ve been pounding the proverbial genealogy brickwall for two decades on this one. Click here for an article on them. Recent findings from the Cardwell DNA Project has narrowed the search down a little, but it would be nice if someone turned up with an old family Bible to solve it. haha.
8. The New England Cardwell Family - The vast majority research on this website concerns the root Virginia branches and their numerous descendants. There is another root of the American Cardwell Family and they are from New England. William Cardwell, veteran of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, has many descendants. They settled in various areas of New England and points to the west. If you have any information on these lines please contact me. I’ll eventually get around to working on this one, but there is only so much time.
