The Cardwells of Middlesex County and King & Queen Counties, Virginia
by Rand Cardwell - 29OCT03 updated 06APR08
The following are Cardwells that have been identified as living in Middlesex County, Virginia. It appears that several of them move to King & Queen County, Virginia after the 1750s. Their exact relationships are unknown, but it is assumed that they are linked to Thomas Cardwell, the presumed father of Thomas Cardwell II that married Martha Perrin. Initially it appears that the father of these Cardwells was a brother or uncle of Thomas Cardwell I. He presumably married Ann Basket and was the father of Thomas Cardwell II that married Martha Perrin. There is still a great deal of research to be conducted on these lines.
UPDATE: A transcript of the Cardwell/Carlton Family Bible has recently surfaced and provides insight into this branch of the family. click here for viewing
William Cardwell married Jane (Last Name Unknown) around 1720 Middlesex County, Virginia. William Cardwell was probably born between 1695 and 1700, which is based on the date of his marriage. His contemporary was Thomas Cardwell that married Martha Perrin. He was appointed the guardian of Mary Goodrich on September 1, 1719 in Middlesex County, Virginia – Middlesex County, Virginia Order Book 5, page 444. William Cardwell appears to have died on December 19, 1744 in Middlesex County, Virginia according to the records of the Parish of Christ Church. Jane Cardwell, his widow, was the administrator of his estate on June 4, 1745. This is found in the Middlesex County, Virginia Wills & Inventories 1673-1812 by William Lindsay Hopkins, Iberian Publishing Co., 1989. William and Jane had the following children:
A. Mary Cardwell – born on October 4, 1721 in Middlesex County, Virginia.
B. William Cardwell – born on March 12, 1723 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He appears to have married Agatha (Last Name Unknown) by 1746. They had the following children: i. Lewis Cardwell – born on June 8, 1746 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was baptized on June 22, 1746 at the Christ Church in Middlesex County. His birth is recorded in the Parish Register of Christ Church. Lewis Cardwell is listed as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
C. Thomas Cardwell – born on July 19, 1726 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was baptized at the Christ Church Parish on September 4, 1726.
D. Jane Cardwell – was born on February 12, 1728 in Middlesex County, Virginia. She was baptized on March 16, 1728 at the Christ Church Parish.

Signed William Cardwell and Thomas Kidd junr.”
Middlesex County, Virginia Will Book D, page 200: August 6, 1751– William Cardwell is mentioned in the estate sale of Henry George. This must be either the son of William or the son of Thomas. More research is needed.
Ann Cardwell married William Brookes on November 8, 1687 according to the record found in the Parish Register of the Christ Church in Middlesex County, Virginia. Ann appears to have died by September 1708 when William Brookes is remarried to what appears to be her sister, Elizabeth Cardwell.
Elizabeth Cardwell married William Brookes, the husband of what appears to be her late sister, Ann, on September 2, 1708 in Middlesex County, Virginia.
Middlesex County, Virginia Deed Book, 3 page 286-288: September 4, 1711 - “This Indenture made the 4th September 1711 Between William Brookes of County of Middx. Mary Cardwell married John Williams on October 10, 1686 in Middlesex County, Virginia. This record is found in the Parish Register of the Christ Church of Middlesex. John Williams is listed as being from Oxfordshire, England and Mary Cordwell is listed as being from Shropshire, England. This might indicate that this family immigrated to the Colonials after about 1660. It might indicate that Mary Cordwell is the widow of Thomas Cordwell who passed away around July 1685. That is the commonly held theory among early Cardwell researchers.
Middlesex County, Virginia Court Order Book 1, page 248: April 5, 1685 – “Appraisal of Estate of Thomas Cordwell, decd. by Mary Cordwell, his widow.”
Middlesex County, Virginia Loose Papers: October 3, 1698 - Will of William Daniell, Sr. mentions land adjoining Thomas Cordwell.

Two daughters; Ann Cordwell (underage) and Penelope Cordwell, Thomas Basket, Son-in-law John Basket, son-in-law Ralph Masey. Witnessed by Daniel Long, Elizabeth Wood & William Daniell, Jr.
Thomas Cardwell married Mary Blackley on June 22, 1716. They had the following children that were recorded in the Parish Register of the Christ Church of Middlesex County, Virginia along with their marriage. This Thomas Cardwell was a contemporary of both William (listed above) and Thomas Cardwell/Martha Perrin. This would suggest that they had different fathers. Possible that Thomas/Martha Perrin’s father was an uncle of the Cardwells in Middlesex County. Thomas and Mary had the following children:
A. William Cardwell – born on July 28, 1717 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He was baptized on August 4, 1717 at the Christ Church in Middlesex County.
B. Anne Cardwell – born on November 20, 1719 in Middlesex County, Virginia. She was baptized on December 20, 1719 at the Christ Church in Middlesex County.
Middlesex County, Virginia Deeds & Miscellaneous Records 1720-1831 by Ruth and Sam Sparacio: In a deed between George Guest and William Standard, both of Middlesex County, there is mention of the following: “… bounded by the Run of Thomas Cardwell’s Spring Branch opposite to ye Southermost point of high land belonging to ye sd. George Guest on the Dragon Swamp side and running down the said Thomas Cardwells Spring Branch according to ye courses of the same made by the aforesaid Richard Attwood to George Guest, father of the said George Guest….”. Other neighbors that are mentioned are Richard Reynolds and William Stand. Witnessed by: Edward Whelley, Thomas Paine and Mary M. Ingram. This deed is dated July 4, 1721.

Middlesex County, Virginia Deeds & Miscellaneous Records 1720-1831 by Ruth and Sam Sparacio: It appears that on March 7, 1737 the land had changed hands again. Principles in this deed are the following: John Bowles of King & Queen County, Virginia and John Seward of Middlesex County, Virginia. Richard Reynolds as being the former owner, having taken possession in 1684 and 1697. Neighbors that are mentioned are Thomas Cardwell and the Dragon Swamp. Witnessed by Thomas Laughlin and John Meachem.
Middlesex County, Virginia Deed Book 1, page 142: August 29, 1747 - “Article of Agreement made and concluded between William Cardwell of Middlesex County and Benjamin Kidd of Middlesex County, witness that said Cardwell, for 3 £ in hand paid and further sum of 40 shillings to be paid 4 years hence, has leased and to farm let his dwelling plantation & all houses thereon, with the appurtenances, situated in Middlesex County, for the term of 4 years from next Dec 25, unto said Kidd, all of which time, Kidd shall reside thereon, and is to leave the same in as good repair as it shall be received by said Benjamin. To the true performance thereof, the parties mutually bind themselves each to the other in the sum of 10 £. Signed Aug 29, 1747 – William Cardwell, Benj. ( + his mark) Kidd, Wit – Tho. John Cardwell married Elizabeth Stamper on February 27, 1783 in Middlesex County, Virginia. Their marriage was recorded in the Parish Register of Christ Church in Middlesex County. Richard Cardwell witnessed this marriage. He is probably a grandson of either William or Thomas.
Middlesex County, Virginia Will Book 2, page 337: February 23, 1807 – Will of Robert Stamper – Will written on January 10, 1803 and recorded on February 23, 1807 – Mentions: son John Stamper the 200 acres left by my father adjoining Abbott’s orphans Lawson, Brooks and Lewis; daughter Elizabeth Cardwell and Sally Kidd; Son Robert Stamper and his heirs; George Stamper & Polly Stamper; “My children viz William, Leo, Nelson, Samuel, Elizabeth Cardwell, and Sally Kidd”; Executors – Leo Stamper and Nelson Stamper. Witnesses – Thomas Kidd & Polly Meacham.
James Cardwell married Ann Eubank, of King & Queen County, Virginia, on January 28, 1779 in Middlesex County, Virginia. Their marriage was recorded in the Parish Register of Christ Church in Middlesex County. He is probably a grandson of either William or Thomas. A recent “discovery” from the Library of Virginia sheds light on this branch of the family. The Cardwell/Carlton Family Bible (click here to view the transcript) contains a wealth of information on this union. It includes birth and death dates of numerous children, grandchildren and even parents of Ann Eubank. Unfortunately, there is no record of the parents of James Cardwell, but there is a mention of Thomas Cardwell living next to him in an old Deed. Ann Eubank was the daughter of Richard Eubank and Ann LNU, his wife. She was born on 16 Mar 1756. James Cardwell’s estimated bith year is around 1755, which is based on the birthday of Ann. James Cardwell and Ann Eubank had the following children:
William Cardwell – Served in the Revolutionary War and moved to Bullitt County, Kentucky. Click here for an article on this Cardwell ancestor.

This branch of the family has received very little research. It is my opinion that it holds the key to several of the unsolved lines of the Cardwell family. The ancestory of Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, NC, William Cardwell (Rev. War Veteran) of Bullitt County, KY, and Thomas Cardwell, husband of Obedience Thweatt, of Halifax Co., VA, may all stem from this branch. Nothing but good old-fashioned research will answer those questions. Given the fact that they have remained elusive to Cardwell researchers for years (and I mean years) and do not link into the Thomas Cardwell/Martha Perrin Branch, this is the only possible direction that I am currently aware that may hold the answer.
