John Cardwell, Jr. was born about 1799 in Virginia. He married first a Ms. Wallace. After her death he married Rebecca "Becca" Jennings (Fulkerson Notes). He is listed in the 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee as being born in about 1802, but that appears to be an error. Living with John and his wife in the 1860 Claiborne County census is Sarah Jennings, born in 1765, the mother of Rebecca Jennings Cardwell.. It is unclear what year that John married Rebecca as the pre-1840 marriage records for Claiborne County were destroyed. John Cardwell, Jr. was the father of the following children:

1. Obediah C. Cardwell - born about 1818 in Claiborne County, TN. He married Martha Lousia Thompson on 08 March 1842 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Thompson, Sr. and Temperance Shearman. They had the following children.

A. John W. G. Cardwell - born on 03 November1844 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He married Milly (Last Name Unknown) in about 1870. She was born on 11 September 1847 in Virginia and died on 15 September 1914 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. John W.G. Cardwell died on 11 November 1911 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. There is a tombstone in the Cardwell Cemetery on Lone Mountain, Claiborne County, TN that lists the following; Elvira Cardwell -b. May 18, 1832 - d. Mar. 23, 1908. Evidence is pointing to Eugene W. Cardwell as being the son of Elvira. That he was born out-of-wedlock to her in 1853 and was raised in the home of his grandparents, John Cardwell, Jr. and Rebecca Jennings. Additional research is still needed to confirm this theory. Eugene is listed below as a child of Elvira, but at present this is only a theory and needs to be validated.

A. Eugene W. Cardwell - born Apr. 28, 1853 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He is probably a grandson of John and Rebecca Cardwell. Additional research is needed. Eugene is listed in the 1880 census of Claiborne County, TN. His wife is named Mary J. (Last Name Unknown) - age 19 (born 1861 in NC). Their children are based on that record. In 1900, he is listed in the Claiborne County census and living with him is Viny (sic) Cardwell. She is listed as his mother. It is theorized that Viny is Elivra Cardwell, daughter of John Cardwell, Jr. and Rebecca Jennings. That indicates that Eugene was born out-of-wedlock to Elvira. Additional research is needed. Eugene died on May 25, 1937. Both he and his wife, Mary J., are buried in the Cardwell Cemetery on Lone Mountain in Claiborne County, TN. Mary J. Cardwell's tombstone states that she was born on Oct. 27, 1860 and died on Mar. 1, 1939. They are listed in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records of Claiborne County, Tennessee. Eugene and Mary had the following children:.

i.. John W. Cardwell - born 03 March 1879 in Claiborne County, TN. He is listed in the 1880 census of Claiborne County, TN in the home of his parents.
