William Cardwell of McNairy County Tennessee: Probable Son of John Cardwell & Mary Royall
by Rand Cardwell - 09Dec2006

William Cardwell - born about 1801 in Virginia. He appears to have married Celia Harper on 07 January 1820 in Grainger County, TN. She was the daughter of Richard Harper and Anne Forrest. Fulkerson stated that he "removed" to the west. They migrate to McNairy County, Tennessee by 1834. There is an interesting record in the McNairy County, Tennessee Deed Books. It is an indenture made on 03 March 1835 between William Cardwell and Stanford L. Saunders, both of McNairy County. The witnesses of that indenture are James Cardwell (click herefor an article on James L. Cardwell) and George Cardwell. It is theorized that James is the brother of William, but the mention of George W. Cardwell provides a new mystery to this branch. George might be another brother of the two McNairy County settlers or he might be a cousin. Click here for information on George W. Cardwell of McNairy County, Tennessee. Additional research is needed on this man. William  is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census of McNairy County, Tennessee. His occupation is listed as a Farmer and Brickmason. It appears that William died between the 1850 and 1860 census, as no further record of him has been located. New research is pointing towards a connection with the Plank/Plunk family of Claiborne and McNairy County, Tennessee. Christian Plank of Claiborne County, Tennessee might have been married to a sister of William Cardwell. The Plunk families of McNairy County, Tennessee appear to be connected in some way to the Cardwells. It appears that the son of William G. Cardwell, son of William and Celia Harper Cardwell, is living with a Pluck family in 1870. This all needs more research, but it points to a possible connect with the Cardwell and Plucks that moved to McNairy County, Tennessee. William Cardwell and Celia Harper had the following children:

1. Hiram Cardwell - born on Sept. 18, 1820 in Claiborne or Grainger County, TN. He married Sarah Saunders on 07 June 1839 in McNairy County, TN. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas Sanders and Elizabeth Rook. They are listed in the 1850 McNairy County, Tennessee census records. Sarah Saunders Cardwell died on 23 April 1852. Hiram migrates to Columbia County, Arkansas in 1853.  Hiram remarried to Matilda Robinson on 03 March 1853 in Columbia County, Arkansas. She was born on 11 May 1832 and died on 28 January 1881. Matilda was the daughter of Michael and Mary Ann Robinson. [Information from the Hiram Cardwell family Bible and provided by Edwin James in 1969.] They are listed in the 1860 Columbia County, Arkansas census records. Hiram C. Cardwell died on 20 March 1866 near Smackover, Columbia County, Arkansas. [There is no positive documentation for Hiram being the son of William and Celia Cardwell. Family tradition is this line states that Hiram had brothers named Pryor and Aaron. This is validated in the known children of William and Celia Harper Cardwell. Finding someone in this line for the Cardwell DNA Project would be very helpful. RC Nov06Hiram C. Cardwell was the father of the following children:
