Royal Cardwell - born about 1795 in Virginia. He married Anna Claypole around 1815 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Anna Claypole was born about 1796 according to the 1850 census of Claiborne County, TN. Royal dies between 1837 and 1840 in Claiborne County, TN. Anna Claypole was the daughter of David Claypole and Ann Dunbar. Her brother, John Claypole, married Royal's sister, Mary Cardwell. At Ann’s death in the early 1850s, the children liquidate the families assests and the majority of the children move to Franklin County, Missouri. Only sons, David and William, stayed in Claiborne County. Royal Cardwell and Anna Claypole had the following children:
1. Mary Dunbar Cardwell - born about 1815 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She is listed in the home of her mother in the 1850 census of that county. Mary Cardwell is listed in the home of her younger brother, James N. Cardwell, in the 1880 census of Franklin County, Missouri. She might be listed in his home in the 1860 Washington County, Missouri census, but additional research is needed. She is reported to have never married after her sweatheart was killed by Indians (Family tradition). No additional information.
2. David Cardwell - born about 1818 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth "Betsie" Caylor on Mar. 25, 1850 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Old Time Tazewell by Mary A. Hansard states that "the widow of David Cardwell owns the B.F. Hooper lot and is living in the same house that was occupied by these old worthy citizens. Mrs. Cardwell's maiden name was Betsie Caylor. She is a very pleasant, inoffensive lady. Her husband and sons all sickened and died several years ago. Her only daughter, Annie, is still living and has never married and is living with and caring for her aged mother. Annie follows the mantua maker's business and teaches school, and is esteemed very highly for her many good qualities and tender care of her aged mother. Mrs. Cardwell is a consistent member of the M.E. Church." David was the Register in the Claiborne County Court for many years and his name can be found on numerous court documents, deeds, etc. for Claiborne County during the period. The David Cardwell family is listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Claiborne County, Tennessee census records. 4. Reuben Claypool Cardwell - born about 1820 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He is found in the home of his widowed mother in the 1850 Claiborne County, Tennessee census. He married Luritta Sanders on 31 October 1844 in Claiborne County, TN. She was born on 03 April 1819 and was the daughter of John “Jackie” Saunders and Olivia “Olivey” Cunningham. They were married on 07 December 1800 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Reuben and Luritta are listed in the 1850 Claiborne County, Tennessee and 1860 Big River, Jefferson County, Missouri census records. Reuben served in the Civil War and is listed in the 1890 census of Missouri Civil War Veterans. Reuben is not listed in the 1880 census of Franklin County, Missouri., but his wife is found with their son; Franklin C. Cardwell and his wife, Catherine Worsham. According to descendant, Frank Cardwell Moffett, Reuben died on 15 August 1862 while in service during the Civil War while in the Union Army. Cause of death was disentery. Frank also states that Reuben had red hair and a aquiline nose. Luritta received a Widow’s Pension from the U.S. Government for his service during the war. The couple migrate to Franklin County, Missouri around 1857 when George Beeler sells his wife's share of the Royal/Anna Cardwell estate, to her brother William Cardwell. George Beeler died on Dec. 25, 1863 in Franklin County, Missouri due to complications of illinesses that he received while serving with the 32nd Missouri Infantry during the Civil War. 10. James N. Cardwell - born about 1835 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. His biography is listed in Goodspeed's History of Franklin County, Missouri. "James N. Cardwell is a native of Claiborne County, Tenn., and was born in 1835. He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools of his native county. He began life for himself at the age of fifteen years, from which time, until her death, he supported his widowed mother. At the age of twenty he removed to Indiana, about one year later came to Pacific, MO., where he remained one winter, then went to Jefferson County, and later to Washington County [Note: listed in 1860 Washington County, Missouri census with several siblings in this home and is living next door to his brother, John Wesley Cardwell], where he remained until the fall of 1861, when he enlisted in the Missouri State Militia for a term of six months and was mustered out January 8, 1862. March 8, 1862, he re-enlisted in Company G, Fifth Missouri Cavalry, was quartermaster sergeant of his company, which operated in Missouri and Arkansas, and was mustered out at Rolla, Mo, April 13, 1865. After the close of the war Mr. Cardwell returned to Franklin County, farmed one season, and then opened a store at Virginia Mines; four years later he went to Texas County, Mo., and ran a general store until the fall of 1874, when he removed to his present farm of 200 acres. [Note: Listed in 1880 Franklin County, Missouri census living next door to his sister, Lucinda Cardwell Slatten.] He was married in 1873 to Miss Susan L. Worsham, a native of Texas County, Missouri., and a daughter of Peter R. and Nancy (Scott) Worsham, natives of Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Cardwell have four children: Oley S., Affie B., Nicholas and Roscoe. Mrs. Cardwell is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Previous to the war Mr. Cardwell was a Democrat, but since then had been a radical Republican. He was appointed justice of the peace, and served about one and one-half years. He was the tenth of eleven children of Rial and Annie (Claypole) Cardwell. Rial Cardwell, a son of John Cardwell, died about 1838; the grandfather was a soldier in the Revolution. Mrs. Annie Cardwell was a daughter of David Claypool, and died in 1856, aged sisty years." They are listed in the 1900 Franklin County, Missouri census.
