James L. Cardwell of McNairy County Tennessee and Franklin County Illinois: Probable Son of John Cardwell & Mary Royall

James L. Cardwell - probable son of John Cardwell and Mary Royall of Claiborne County, Tennessee. He was born in 1797 in Virginia. Fulkerson did not list James Cardwell among the children of John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN, but evidence points in that direction. James Cardwell married Leah Saunders and migrated to McNairy County, Tennessee with the Saunders family and William Cardwell, his brother. (click here for an article on William) Descendants of the Saunders family state that James Cardwell's wife, Leah Saunders, was the sister of the wife of Hiram Cardwell. Hiram Cardwell is listed as James' nephew and is the highly probable son of William Cardwell. That link is the only evidence that confirms that William and James are brothers. It is possible that they are the sons of Thomas Cardwell (1760->1840), probably brother of John Cardwell, or Perrin Cardwell, oldest son of John Cardwell, of Claiborne County, TN. If that theory is correct then the William Cardwell that Fulkerson listed as a son of John Cardwell moved west and has not been found in any records yet. More research is needed on this line. James Cardwell and Leah Saunders had the following children:

1. Mary Ann Cardwell - born about 1818 in Claiborne or Grainger County, Tennessee. She died after 1880 in Franklin County, Illinois. Mary Ann “Polly” married Andrew Jackson Auten in about 1837 in McNairy County, Tennessee. The McNairy County marriage records were destroyed by fire and this marriage is estimated on the birth of her oldest child. Andrew J. Auten was born about 1813 in North Carolina and died after the 1880 census in Franklin County, Illinois. They migrated with James L. Cardwell, Mary’s father, in 1852 to Franklin County, Illinois. They had the following children:

A. Holloway F. Auten - born on 09 Nov 1838 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He died in 1873. Holloway married Melissa Elizabeth Perryman. No additional information.

B. Margaret Ann Auten - born on 16 Mar 1840 in McNairy County, Tennessee. She married Andrew Jackson Vinson in April 1860. Margaret died in 1921. No additional information.

C. Carroll L. Auten - born about 1841 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He married Louisa J. McLearin on 28 Nov 1861. No additional information.

D. Leah Elizabeth Auten - born about 1842 in McNairy County, Tennessee. She married Alexander Plasters on 26 Aug 1860. She married Isaiah B. Clark on 03 May 1864. Leah died in 1882. No additional information.

E. Terrell Houston Auten - born in March 1844 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He died in Augus 1910 in Franklin County, Illinois. Terrell married Nancy Ann Rebecca Knight on 20 July 1873. No additional information.

F. Manila “Maniley” Jane Auten - born about 1846 in McNairy County, Tennessee. She married Thomas Heard on 01 January 1865. Manila died in 1941. No additional information.

2. Elizabeth “Betsey” Cardwell - born about 1823 in Claiborne or Graniger County, Tennessee. She married Thomas Britton Elliff on 03 February 1839 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Elliff and Nancy Britton. Thomas was born about 1823 in Giles County, Tennessee and died in about 1895 in Giles County. Elizabeth died about 1892 in Giles County, Tennessee. This couple did not accompany James L Cardwell on his move to Franklin County, Illinois. They stayed in Tennessee and moved from McNairy County to Giles County. Elizabeth and Thomas had the following children:

E. James Thomas Elliff - born on 12 May 1845 in Giles County, Tennessee. He died on 31 January 1913 in Cambria, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. James married Sarah Jane Boren. After her death he married Mary Jane Smith on 24 May 1865 in Obion County, Tennessee. No additional information.

Terrell married Mary Ann LNU in about 1845 in McNairy County, Tennessee. They are listed in the 1850 census of McNairy County, Tennessee. It is unknown what happened to Mary Ann, but Terrell remarried to Missouri “Zuriah” Ann Anderson on 15 September 1855 in Saline County, Illinois. She was born about 1836 in Kentucky Terrell joined his father and several siblings on the journey from McNairy County, Tennessee to Saline County, Illinois in about 1852. In 1860, he is llisted in the Saline County, Illinois census without any of his children from Tennessee. Terrell was the father of the following children:

A. Isaac Cardwell - born about 1846 in McNairy County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 census of that county. In 1870 and 1880 he is listed in the Franklin County, Illinois census records. Isaac married Mary Flanagan Carter in about 1868 in Franklin County, Illinois. They are listed in the 1870 census with her two sons from an earlier marriage, Robert E. Carter and Charles E. Carter. They are living with the family again in 1880 in the Franklin County census. Also, that year is Susan Flanagan who is listed as “Mother-In-Law”. They are listed in the home of their daughter, Susan Jane Cardwell Aiken, in the 1900 Kingfisher County, Oklahoma census. Isaac and Mary had the following children:

i. Susan Jane Cardwell - born about 1868 in Franklin County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 and 1880 census for that county.She maried Ferris Aiken in about 1888 in Franklin County, Illinois. They are listed in the 1900 Kingfisher County, Oklahoma census. Susan Jane and Ferris had the following children:
