Francis Cardwell was born between 1790-1800 in Virginia. He married Judah Lebo, daughter of Henry Lebo, in about 1815 probably in Claiborne County, Tennessee. [Note: The pre-1840 marriage records were destroyed by fire in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Many of Cardwells of Claiborne County can be found in the records of neighboring Grainger County, but this marriage does not exist in those records. It is assumed that Francis married in Claiborne County, Tennessee given his geographic location at the time.] Francis Cardwell moves to Warren County, Tennessee with Henry Lebo in the 1820s. Fulkerson's note state that Francis Cardwell married Julia Lebo and "removed" to West Tennessee. Francis Cardwell died in 1844. His son, Henry Jefferson Cardwell, was the administator of his estate and guardian of the minor children. Judah is listed in the 1850 and 1860 Warren County, Tennessee census records. She died in 1867 in Warren County, Tennessee. This line is part of the Cardwell DNA Project. Francis and Judah had the following children:.

1. John Cardwell - born about 1816 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He moved to Warren County, Tennessee in the 1820’s along with his parents and siblings. John married Sarah Kell around 1841 in Warren County, Tennessee. Sarah was born in June 1821 according to the 1900 Warren County, Tennessee census records. She was the daughter of Thomas Kell and Lydia Lakey. John Cardwell was accidentally killed by a falling tree on 19 January 1884 in Warren County, Tennessee. (The Warren County Story - 1995 - by Eugene M. Wiseman) His widow, Sarah, is listed in the 1900 Warren County, Tennessee with Sarah is listed in the 1910 census of Warren County living in the home of William W. McGregor as “Mother-In-law”. His wife is listed as Belle McGregor. John Cardwell and Sarah Kell had the following children.

A. Margaret Cardwell - born about 1842 in Warren County, Tennessee. She married Charles S. Lowery on 12 February 1869 in Warren County, Tennessee. They move to Bell County, Texas and are found in the 1880 census. Charles S. Lowery was born about 1845 in Tennessee. Thomas, Margaret’s brother, and his family move to Bell County, Texas and are listed on the same page of that census. Margaret and Charles are found in the 1900 census of Johnson County, Texas near Thomas Cardwell once again. Charles and Margaret had the following children:

i. Carrie B, Lowery - born about 1870 in Warren County, Tennessee. She is listed in the 1880 Bell County, Texas census in the home of her parents. No additional information.

ii. John A. Lowery - born about 1872 in Warren County, Tennessee. He is listed in the 1880 census of Bell County, Texas in the home of his parents. No additional infomraton.

B. James P. Cardwell - born about 1844 in Warren County, Tennessee. He married Martha Parks on 11 August 1870 in Warren County, Tennessee. James might have served in the Civil War in 11th Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, but more research is needed. They are listed in the 1880 census of Warren County, Tennessee with Mary Kell (born 1867), a cousin, and Carroll Parks (born 1875), a nephew. In the 1900 census of Warren County, he is listed with Eliza F. LNU as his wife. Martha must have died between 1880 and 1900. He is listed in the 1910 census of Warren County with his daughter, Daisy H. (see below). James P. Cardwell is the father of the following children:

C. Thomas L or F. Cardwell - born about 1849 in Warren County, Tennessee. Research points to a Thomas L. Cardwell - born 1849 in Tennessee - that is living in Bell County, Texas in 1880. The logic with this “Thomas” being the son of John and Sarah Kell Cardwell is that Margaret Cardwell Lowery and Melissa Cardwell McGregor, sisters of Thomas, are living in Johnson County, Texas in 1900. There is a conflicting marriage record in Warren County, Tennessee in which Thomas Cardwell married Maggie Jones on 24 October 1885. The Thomas that is in Johnson County, Texas is married to a woman named Sallie A. (Maiden Name Unknown). Plus, they were in Texas in 1880 in Bell County living next to Margaret Cardwell Lowery and her family. More research is needed on this line. Thomas Cardwell married Sallie A. LNU in about 1878. This is based on the birth year of their oldest child. Both Thomas and Sarah were born in Tennessee. All of their children were born in Texas. They are in the 1910 Johnson County, Texas census. Thomas and Sarah had the following children:

2. Perrin Cardwell - born about 1820 in Claiborne County, TN. He married Jeanine Perry in about 1855. Perrin Cardwell is living with several members of the Perry family in the 1870 census of Warren County, TN. Additional census records and court documents for Warren County state that Perrin was “Insane” or “Idotic”. It appears that Perrin Cardwell and Jeanine Perry Cardwell had the following children.

3. Henry Jefferson Cardwell - DNA Project - born about 1823 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Henry, along with his parents and siblings, moved to Warren County, Tennessee during the 1820’s. He married Louisa Jaco on 15 October 1847 in Warren County, Tennessee. She was the daugther of Jeremiah Jaco and Annie Boyacin. They are listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Warren County, Tennessee census records. Henry owned much of what is known as Cardwell Mountain in Warren County, Tennessee. He raised peaches and apples and is mentioned in the Southern Standard, April 21, 1883, "H.J. Cardwell grew Limbertwig apples as well as pears." Henry was the administrator of his father's estate in 1844 and was guardian of his minor siblings. Later in life, Henry served as a Trustee to Irving College in 1882. Henry Jefferson Cardwell served in the 35th Tennessee Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. In the 1850 census of Warren County, Tennessee it appears that Henry's brother, Perrin Cardwell, is living with the family. From Goodspeed's History of Warren County, TN, "H.J. Cardwell, a well known planter in Warren County, was born near Cumberland Gap, Claiborne Co., Tenn. in 1825. He is the son of Francis and Judy (Leboe) Cardwell. The father was of English descent born in Virginia, and in abour 1806 immigrated to Tennessee and settled in Warren County. He was a farmer by occupation, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and died in 1844. The mother was of German-French orgin, born in Claiborne County, Tenn. She was a member of the same church as her husband and died in 1867. H.J. received only limited educational advantages in youth, but has greatly improved his education by select and extensive reading. Early in life he began farming and now gives his time and attention principally to fruit raising. October 15, 1847, Mr. Cardwell marrried Louisa, daughter of Jereminah and Annie (Boyacin) Jaco. This union resulted in then children - six sons and four daughters - two sons and one daughter desceased. He was commissioned militia officer by Aaron V. Brown and held this office at the beginning of the late war. He had several times been solicited to represent his people in the State Leguslature, but had always declined. He is a liberal supporter and contributor to all educational and religious institutions. He has given each of his children a good academical education and has one son who is a successful teacher, and one in the mercantile business at Shell's Ford, Warren County.
