Daniel J. Cardwell - He was born about 1820 in Tennessee according to various census records. He died after June 8, 1880 in Graniger County, Tennessee. That was the date the 1880 census was taken in that county. Daniel J. Cardwell appears to be the brother of Mary Eglantine Cardwell. She married Abel Hill in about 1827 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Daniel was the bondsman to the marriage of George Dyer and Mildred Cardwell on February 13, 1838 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Just a couple of weeks prior to his marriage, Daniel J. Cardwell was the bondsman for the marriage of Pleasant Dyer and Margaret Lain on February 21, 1839 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Daniel J. Cardwell married Frances “Fanny” Norris on March 3, 1839 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1840 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee (Daniel Cardwell 00001-10001) in the 14th District on page 24. He living next to Mary Eglantine Cardwell Hill and her husband, Abel (Abel Hill 021001-221011) and James Dyer, Jr. (James Dyer, Jr. 000001-32001). James Calvin Cardwell, future son of Daniel, would eventually marry one of James Dyer’s daughters, Elizabeth J. Dyer.
The Grainger County, Tennessee Court ordered a list be made of all Free White Males of the County. Daniel J. Cardwell appears on that list on June 7, 1841. He is listed in the 1850 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee (Daniel J. Cardwell – family #247 – page # ?). This is where the names and birth years of his children are established. There are few records of Daniel J. Cardwell in the records of Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee, but one that is found is the Union County, Tennessee. Union County, Tennessee County Court Minutes - August 4, 1856 – “Ordered by the Court that a Jury of review be appointed to alter and change a road of the 2nd class. Commencing on the top of Cooper Ridge above Wm. T. Cardens, to intersect the Flat Creek Road near Daniel Cardwells. Consisting of the following Jurors; Wm. Hubbs, Sr., John Hill, K.C. Hill, Nathaniel Acuff, Robert Field and James Hubbs.”
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1860 Union County, Tennessee census. (Daniel J. Cardwell – family # 342 – page # 48) Union County was formed from the parts of Grainger, Claiborne, Campbell and Knox Counties in 1860. Additional children are added from this record. Warwick’s Chapel Church was organized in June 1869 in Lutrell, also known as Cedarford, in Union County, Tennessee. The early meetings were held in the home of John Ferguson, but a building was constructed in 1871 on land that was donated by J. Sterling Warwick. The members of Warwick’s Chapel Church are recorded in the Church records and the following charter members joined from the Powder Springs Gap Church of Grainger County; Daniel Cardwell, Fannie Cardwell, E.W. Popejoy, Mary Popejoy, James Hubbs, Elizabeth Hubbs, Josephine Hickle, James Dyer, Jr. and James Dyer, Sr.
In a thorough examination of the Deed Books of Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee it appears that Daniel J. Cardwell never owned any land. This indicates that he was a sharecropper, which is a term used to describe a person that farms the land of someone else and shares a portion of their profit with the land owner. No deed that mentions Daniel J. Cardwell is known to exist.
Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the 1880 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee. He is living next to James Cardwell, son of Perrin Cardwell and Eliza Norris, and also John Tilman Cardwell who is his youngest son. Frances is still living and with them in their home is Lewis Cardwell, listed as a grandson. Daniel J. Cardwell lists that he was born in Tennessee. That his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Frances Norris Cardwell states that she was born in Tennessee and both of her parents were born in North Carolina. This is the last known record of Daniel J. Cardwell and it can be assumed that he died sometime after the 1880 census, which was taken on June 8, 1880.
Recent results from the Cardwell Family DNA have shown some interesting trends. I was the first person by the surname of Cardwell to have their DNA tested for genealogy. There have been several other lines in the Cardwell family that have submitted for tests, but until the last return (in Oct 2006) there have yet to be an exact match. Well, that has now happened! Ted Cardwell, from the Francis Cardwell and Judah Lebo line (Francis being the son of John Cardwell and Mary Royall of Claiborne County, TN) and I have an exact match on the 36 of 37 markers. This is a fairly important discovery for me and I’m currently researching the Claiborne County records for any mention of Daniel. Considering that there is no documented evidence on his parents, it will be a major break in hopefully solving this line. The Grainger/Claiborne County, TN area had at least five different lines of Cardwell families pass through the area in the early 1800s. Extensive research into those lines have never been able to establish a link with Daniel J. Cardwell.
THEORY - Given the latest results of the Cardwell DNA Project there is a high possibility that Daniel J. Cardwell is the son of Perrin Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee. Click here for an article concerning Perrin. Daniel was living close to Mary Hill (nee Cardwell) and her husband, Abel, in the 1840 and 1850 Grainger County, Tennessee census records. The close association between the two points to a kinship. They were probably siblings along with Perrin, born 1808. Mary’s descendants have maintained that she was the daughter of Perrin Cardwell. Early researchers grouped her in the family of Rev. Perrin Cardwell of Knox County, Tennessee. Detailed research failed to make a connection to that particular family. All of Rev. Perrin Cardwell’s children are well-documented and Mary just isn’t listed in any known record. The only possible connection is to Perrin Cardwell, son of John Cardwell and Mary Royall, of Claiborne County, Tennessee. 29Aug2007
The Children of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris
1. Nancy E. Cardwell was born about 1840 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She married John Booker on March 16, 1867 in Union County, Tennessee. John Booker was born on October 19, 1822 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He was the son of George W. Booker and Sarah Bond. George W. Booker migrated to Grainger County, Tennessee from Amelia County, Virginia. John Booker was married to Mary Jane Baker in Grainger County, Tennessee in 1850. They had six children before Mary Jane died in about 1861 in Union County, Tennessee. John Booker remarried to Nancy E. Cardwell on March 16, 1867 in Union County, Tennessee. It would appear that Nancy E. Cardwell may have died, possible during childbirth, and John Booker remarried to Susannah Carden on June 13, 1868 in Maynardville, Union County, Tennessee. Booker family researchers state that Nancy E. Cardwell died in September 1867. According to Annette Andersen, a descendant of John Booker, Nancy Cardwell did not have any children by John Booker.
2. Mary “Polly” Cardwell was born about 1842 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Mary Cardwell is listed in the home of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris in the 1850 Grainger County, Tennessee census. She is listed as being eight years old on that census. (Daniel J. Cardwell – Grainger County, Tennessee #1826-Family #247). In the 1860 census Daniel J. Cardwell is listed in the newly formed Union County records. (Dan Cardwell – Union County, Tennessee page 48, family # 342). Mary Cardwell is listed as being 18 years old. The 1870 Union County, Tennessee Census finds Mary Cardwell still living at home with her parents, Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris. She is twenty-eight years old. There is no record of her after that census. It is possible that Mary Cardwell had some children out of wedlock that lived with the family. They are listed here for research purposes only.
A. James W. Cardwell was born about 1862 in Union County, Tennessee. He is a possible grandson of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris. No additional information. He is listed in the 1880 census of Grainger County, Tennessee in the home of John Tilman Cardwell and Easter Fraker. He first is found in the 1870 Census of Union County, Tennessee in the home of Daniel J. Cardwell. In 1880 James W. Cardwell is found in the Grainger County, Tennessee census. He is living in the home of his uncle, John Tilman Cardwell. They are next door to Daniel J., Frances and Lewis Cardwell.
B. Lewis B. Cardwell was born about 1867. He is listed in the 1880 census in the home of Daniel J. Cardwell as his grandson. Considering that Mary Cardwell lived with her parents until after the 1870 census of Union County, Tennessee she is a likely candidate for the parent of Lewis B. Cardwell. It is possible that James W. Cardwell and Lewis B. Cardwell were the sons of Nancy E. Cardwell prior to her marriage to John Booker in 1867. They have been attributed to Mary Cardwell for research purposed only. Additional research is needed. He is listed in the 1910 Corryton, Knox County, Tennessee census records. Lewis is listed in the 1920 census of Knox County, Tennessee with wife, Mary (Last Name Unknown). She was born about 1876. Their children are listed below. It is not known if he remarried, but in the 1930 Census of Knox County, Tennessee he is listed with a wife named Kate (Last Name Unknown). She was born about 1875. It appears to have been the same one based on year of birth. He has one son listed as being still at home in that record.

No additional information.

Alfred Cardwell is listed census record with Isabel Nance, which appears to be his second wife, but she is not listed in any of his pension records. According to the 1880 Union County, Tennessee Isabel Nance was born about 1852. Alfred Cardwell applies for a Civil War Pension on February 25, 1890 in Grainger County, Tennessee. A. Robert Cardwell – born in May 1880 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He possible married Rachel (Last Name Unknown) and died before the 1930 census of Knox County, Tennessee. She is listed as the head of household with the following children:
i. Leon Cardwell – born about 1919 in Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his widowed mother in the 1930 Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee census records. No additional information.
ii. Ralph Cardwell – born about 1922 in Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his widowed mother in the 1930 Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee census records. No additional information.
iii. Mildred Cardwell – born about 1924 in Tennessee. She is listed in the home of her widowed mother in the 1930 Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee census records. No additional information.
B. Margie Cardwell – born in September 1885 in either Grainger or Knox County, Tennessee. In the 1880 Grainger County, Tennessee Census there is a James Cardwell living with John Tilman Cardwell that is listed as a nephew. The 1890 census was destroyed and the next record of John Tilman Cardwell is found in the 1900 Knox County, Tennessee census. It is established that he moved from Grainger County to Knox County sometime between 1880 and 1900. The exact date is not known. Margie is living at the home of her father in the 1920 census of Knox County, Tennessee.
8. Jane L. Cardwell was born about 1859 in Union County, Tennessee. She is a possible granddaughter of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris. She is listed in the 1860 Union County, Tennessee census in the household of Daniel J. Cardwell. No additional information. It is likely that she is the daughter of Daniel and Frances. Frances would have been thirty-nine at the time of the birth. All other children that are listed with this family that are younger than Jane L. Cardwell are grandchildren of that couple.
Research has failed to establish Daniel J. Cardwell’s parents, but it is possible that he was the son of William Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee. There is a group of Cardwells with birth ranges that indicate that they could be siblings, but there is no known link to a known member of the Cardwell family. Those include;
Mary Eglantine Cardwell – born about 1807 in Tennessee.
Perrin Cardwell – born about 1808 in Tennessee.
Edward Cardwell – born about 1818 in Tennessee.
Daniel J. Cardwell – born about 1820 in Tennessee.
Nancy Cardwell – born between 1825 and 1830 in Tennessee.
All of these individuals lived in the Clinch River area that divided Claiborne and Grainger Counties, Tennessee. There is other evidence that links some of them to each other, but it is circumstantial in nature. One is that Perrin Cardwell and Daniel J. Cardwell both married Norris women. It was fairly common for members of the same family to intermarry with the members of another family. Secondly, Mary Eglantine Cardwell married Abel Hill. In the 1840 census of Grainger County, Tennessee Abel Hill and family are living next door to Daniel J. Cardwell. Daniel J. Cardwell stated in the 1880 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee that his father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. A possible lead is that one of the families that migrated to Claiborne County, Tennessee from Pennsylvania was the family of Henry Lebow. One of his daughters married Francis Cardwell, son of John Cardwell, Sr. of Claiborne County. That possibility is being researched for a connection, but nothing has been found as of yet.
In examining the migration trends from some of the Claiborne County, Tennessee groups there appears to be a possible connection to Blount County, Tennessee. Several families from the general area that William Cardwell lived at in Claiborne County migrated to Blount County, Tennessee in the early 1800s. Those were the Lebows, Phelps and possibly some other families. There were some Cardwell families that lived in Blount County, Tennessee that do not link with the other established Cardwells in Tennessee. This needs to be examined to determine if they are linked to Claiborne County. There were two marriages concerning Cardwells in Blount County, Tennessee in the 1820s. Also, there were Cardwells that were listed on the 1840 and 1850 Census for that county. As of January 2003 this compiler had not reviewed those records, but know of their existence due to census indexes.
Mary Eglantine Cardwell
Abel Hill and Mary Eglantine Cardwell can be found in the 1840 Grainger County, Tennessee census. They are living next to Daniel J. Cardwell, Mary’s highly probable brother, in that record.. After 1850, the majority of the Abel Hill familiy moves to Union County, Illinois. Mary died in Union County, Illinois in the 1860s. There is a family tradition in the Hill family that Mary’s father was Perrin Cardwell. Early researchers assumed that it was the Rev. Perrin Cardwell of Grainger and Knox County, Tennessee, but extensive research has proven that as false. All of the Rev. Perrin’s children can be documented by various records in Grainger and Knox County, Tennnessee. There was another Perrin Cardwell, son of John and Mary Royall Cardwell, that lived in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Claiborne County is on the western border of Grainger County and is divided by the Clinch River. Several of the documented Claiborne County Cardwells can be found in the records of Grainger County. This theory is one that needs to be researched in an effort to connect Mary and the other unsolved Cardwell ancestors of Grainger County to the documented family. Researchers in Union County, Illinois state that Mary Eglantine Cardwell Hill stated that her father was Perrin Cardwell. Numerous early Cardwell researchers assumed that this was Rev. Perrin Cardwell of Knox County, Tennessee, but recent DNA results are pointing to a connection with the Caliborne County, Tennessee group. John Cardwell, son of George Cardwell and Leticia LNU, moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee around 1801. His oldest son was named Perrin Cardwell. There is very little information on Perrin and the possibility exist that several of the Unsolved Grainger County Group members MIGHT be his children. Additional information is needed. Click here for an article on Perrin Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee. The following are some reseach notes to help researchers.
Several Lebows from Blount Co.,TN move to Union Co. Illinois in 1857. Check 1860 census for details. Possibility that John Cardwell made the move as well. If so, assume that John Cardwell is a brother to Daniel J. and Mary E. Cardwell.
***NOTE: The Leabow Family lived in the same area of Claiborne & Grainger Counties, TN. They migrated to Claiborne County from Pennsylvania. Daniel J. Cardwell stated in the 1880 census that his mother was born in PA. Additionally, the given name of Henry is passed down in the line of Perrin Cardwell (b. 1808). Henry Leabow might be their grandfather, but additional research is needed. This information is added for research purposes only.
Abel Hill (b:1807 in VA; d:1859 in IL) Marriage 1: 1826 probably in Claiborne County, Tennessee. The pre-1840 marriage records were destroyed when the Claiborne County Courthouse burned. There is no documentation of the marriage in the records of Grainger County, which is were the couple are listed in the Tennessee census records.

George W. Cardwell of McNairy County, Tennessee
In researching the families of William and James L. Cardwell, highly probable sons of John Cardwell and Mary Royall of Claiborne County, Tennessee, there is mention of George W. Cardwell that is associated with these two men in McNairy County. William and James Cardwell moved from the Claiborne/Grainger County, Tennessee area to McNairy County, Tennessee in the early 1830s. Here is a list of all the Cardwell families listed in the 1840 McNairy County, Tennessee census record.
William Cardwell: 1201001-2100001
Hiram C. Cardwell: 0001-00001
James L. Cardwell: 1200001-220001
George W. Cardwell: 22101-11001
Considering that William and James L. Cardwell are both known to have came from the Claiborne/Grainger County, Tennessee area, it is a safe assumption that George W. Cardwell came with them. The question remains as to how George connects to the Claiborne/Grainger County Cardwell families. He is not listed in the records concerning John Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee that was provided by early area researchers, Judge P.G. Fulkerson. Attempts to locate George in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census has all proven negative.
Edward/Edmond Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee
Edward is another one of the unconnected Cardwells of the Claiborne/Grainger County, Tennessee area. He is listed in the 1840 Claiborne County, Tennessee census. He was born between 1810 and 1820 and is married to a woman born between 1810 and 1820. They have three children in that record. Edward is listed in the 1839 Claiborne County, Tennessee Tax List in District 8. On 29 June 1839, he is listed in the estate sale of Jacob Shultz in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Also listed in that same estate sale is Thomas Cardwell (listed below). Edward has not been connected to the established Cardwell families in the region and research has not located him in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records.
Thomas Cardwell of Claiborne
Thomas Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee is found in the 1840 census listed near Layton Romines and Joseph Naramore. He appears to be in the same community as William Cardwell was in 1830. Pendergraft, among others, have grouped William Cardwell as the son of Thomas Cardwell. It appears that in the 1830 census that Thomas Cardwell is listed in the home of William.

Thomas Cardwell 0000000001-00100001
1830 Claiborne County, Tennessee Census – page 113
William Cardwell 020001001-110001
From analyzing the two records it would appear as follows. In 1830 Thomas Cardwell might be living with William Cardwell, his probable son. Thomas Cardwell is listed as being as being born between 1760 and 1770. In the 1840 census he is listed as being born between 1760 and 1770. William Cardwell as being born between 1790 and 1800. His unknown wife is listed as being born between 1790 and 1800. One daughter was born between 1820 and 1825. Another daughter was born between 1825 and 1830. Two sons were born between 1820 and 1825. William Cardwell appears to have died between 1830 and 1840. That would leave Thomas as the head of household in 1840. The unknown woman in his home in 1840 is listed as being born between 1780 and 1790. The young girl is listed as being born between 1825 and 1830. The girl would match the youngest daughter of William Cardwell. She would more than likely marry around 1845 in either Claiborne or Grainger County.
Nancy Cardwell married Joseph Cunningham on December 23, 1844 in Claiborne County, Tennessee.
Joseph Cunningham, born ca. 1824 in Claiborne Co., TN. He married Nancy Cardwell on December 23, 1844.
Children of Joseph Cunningham and Nancy Cardwell are: John Cunningham; William H. Cunningham; Winnie Cunningham; Lucinda Cunningham; Pryor Cunningham; George Cunningham. Joseph Cunningham was the son of Mordecia Cunningham and Elizabeth Cook. They are listed in the census records of Claiborne County, Tennessee (1850, 1860, 1870) They are living in the 10th district which is near John Cardwell, Jr. and his family. Need to check the 1840 census for Claiborne and view children of John. She might be his daughter.
Mary Cardwell
Mary Cardwell was born about 1821 in Tennessee. She married Edward W. Popejoy on March 9, 1844 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He is the son of Nathaniel Popejoy and ? They were charter members of Warwick’s Chapel Church in Luttrel, Union County, Tennessee in June 1869. They joined from Powder Springs Gap Church along with Daniel J. Cardwell and his wife, Frances. Mary Cardwell and Edward W. Popejoy had the following children:
A. John H. Popejoy – born about 1845 in Grainger County, Tennessee. No additional information.
B. Nathaniel Popejoy – born about 1847 in Grainger County, Tennessee. No additional information.
C. Anderson Popejoy – born about 1849 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
Perrin Cardwell
1808 to 1850>1860
Grainger & Claiborne Counties, Tennessee
Perrin Cardwell was born about 1808 in Tennessee. Research has failed to establish his parents, but it is possible that he was the son of William Cardwell of Claiborne County, Tennessee. There is a group of Cardwells with birth ranges that indicate that they could be siblings, but there is no known link to a known member of the Cardwell family. Those include;
Mary Eglantine Cardwell – born about 1807. Grainger before Illinois.
Perrin Cardwell – born about 1808. Grainger & Claiborne.
Edward Cardwell – born about 1818. Claiborne till 1840 then disappears.
Daniel J. Cardwell – born about 1820. Grainger and Union Counties.
Nancy Cardwell – born between 1825 and 1830. Claiborne.
One of his daughters married Francis Cardwell, documented son of John Cardwell, Sr. of Claiborne County. That possibility is being researched for a connection, but nothing has been found as of yet.
In examining the migration trends from some of the Claiborne County, Tennessee groups there appears to a possible connection to Blount County, Tennessee.
Perrin Cardwell married Eliza “Louisa” Norris on November 26, 1836 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Andrew P. Mitchell was the bondsman. Eliza “Louisa” Norris was born in about 1817 in Tennessee, probably in Grainger County. Her parents have not been established, but there are several Norris families in Grainger County during that time. According to census records they had the following children:
1. Henry H. Cardwell – born November 2, 1838 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He is found on the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee living in the home of his father. Henry H. Cardwell is living with his remaining family in the 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee after the apparent death of Perrin Cardwell. He married Elizabeth Corum on June 1, 1861 in Grainger County, Tennessee. In the 1880 census of Grainger County, Tennessee she stated that she was born in Tennessee and her mother and father were born in Tennessee and Virginia respectively. Henry H. Cardwell served as a Private in the 1st Cavalry, USA during the Civil War. He enlisted on January 1, 1863 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was discharged on June 19, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. Henry H. Cardwell was 5’8” tall and had black eyes, dark complexion and dark hair according to his Civil War service records. Henry H. Cardwell returned home after the war and is found in the 1880 Grainger County, Tennessee census with Elizabeth M. Corum Cardwell and what appears as their only child, James W. Cardwell. According to that record Elizabeth was born about 1828 and is eight years older than her husband. They are living near the Anne Corum, age 70, and Henry Corum, age 32. Anne Corum appears to be the mother of Elizabeth, but additional research is needed on this line to be sure. Sometime after the 1880 census Henry H. Cardwell moved his family to Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. He filed for a Invalid Pension on July 17, 1890 in Greene County, Missouri stating that he suffered from rheumatism and neuralgia. Those pension records provide the date of death for his wife. Elizabeth M. Corum Cardwell died on December 24, 1892 in Greene County, Missouri. It also provides information on their children. Henry H. Cardwell never remarried and lived at the home of his only surviving child, James W. Cardwell. Henry H. Cardwell died on December 3, 1923 in Greene County, Missouri. He was eighty-five years old at the time of his death. Henry H. Cardwell and Elizabeth M. Corum had the following children:
A. Anna Cardwell – died in 1863 as an infant. Her date of birth was not stated in the pension application of Henry H. Cardwell.
B. John Wesley Cardwell – died in 1866 as an infant. His date birth was not stated in the pension application of Henry H. Cardwell.
C. James William Cardwell – born on May 24, 1868 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He is listed in the 1880 Grainger County, Tennessee census in the home of his father. Henry H. Cardwell’s pension application states that James W. Cardwell is his only living child. After the family moved to Greene County, Missouri it appears that Henry H. Cardwell’s health declined. James W. Cardwell is listed in the supporting documents concerning the pension of his father as providing constant care for him until his death. In one document James W. Cardwell states that his son, Glenn H. Cardwell, had served in World War I in the 130th Machine Gun Battalion of the 35th Division. He further describes the poor state of his father, Henry H. Cardwell, who is completely bedridden in 1921. James William Cardwell married Martha Mattie (Unsure about Surname) and had the following children:
i. Roxie Cardwell – born on July 2, 1894 in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. She married a Young. Roxie Cardwell Young died on December 15, 1970 in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. No additional information.
ii. Glenn Cardwell – born August 29, 1895 in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. He served in World War I (see information in sketch on his father). Glenn retired from the railroad before 1951. He died in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri in February 1967. No additional information.
iii. Monta Lee Cardwell – born October 6, 1898 in Ash Grove, Greene County, Missouri. She married a Farmer. Monta Lee Cardwell Farmer died on September 15, 1991 at Pleasant Hope, Polk County, Missouri. No additional information.
iv. Living Cardwell – no additional information.
2. Mary C. Cardwell – born about 1840 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Mary C. Cardwell is found listed in the home of her father, Perrin Cardwell, in the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She married Hubbard Dyer on December 15, 1854 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He was born about 1835 in Grainger County, Tennessee and the son of James Dyer and Bridget (Last Name Unknown). Hubbard Dyer served as a Private in Company A of the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, USA during the Civil War. It appears that Hubbard Dyer may have died during the Civil War. Mary C. Cardwell is living with her mother and younger siblings in the 1870 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She has reverted to using her maiden name according to that census. Mary C. Cardwell and Hubbard Dyer had the following children:
A. Lenora Dyer – born about 1859 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She appears to be living in the home of Eliza Cardwell, her grandmother, in the 1880 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee.
3. William J. Cardwell – born about 1841 in Grainger County, Tennessee. William J. Cardwell is listed as the head of household in the 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee after the apparent death of his father. He served as a Private in Company F of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry, USA. This was the same unit that his brother, Henry H. Cardwell, served in during the Civil War. William J. Cardwell was killed in action on June 23, 1863 in a skirmish near Triune, Tennessee. He does not appear to have married, nor had any children.
4. Harriet Louisa Cardwell – born about 1843 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She is found listed in the home of her father, Perrin Cardwell, in the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. I. Thomas P. Mynatt – born on September 5, 1878 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He died on November 28, 1881. No additional information.
J. Tina Mae Mynatt – born on November 13, 1882 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She died on August 9, 1949. No additional information.
5. Elizabeth M. Cardwell – born about 1845 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Elizabeth M. Cardwell is listed in the home of her father, Perrin Cardwell, in the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She is listed in the 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee living with her remaining family after the apparent death of her father. Elizabeth M. Cardwell is listed in the home of her mother in the 1870 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She married Samuel Brummett on January 7, 1871 in Knox County, Tennessee.
6. Susan E. Cardwell – born about 1847 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Susan is found in the home of her father, Perrin Cardwell, in the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She is listed with her remaining family in the 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee after the apparent death of her father. Susan E. Cardwell is listed in the home of her mother in the 1870 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. She married Ephraim Dyer on April 12, 1873 in Union County, Tennessee. Ephrain Dyer was the son of James Dyer, Jr. and Mary Morgan. He was born about 1852 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Ephrain Dyer was the brother of Elizabeth Jane Dyer that married James Calvin Cardwell. James Calvin Cardwell was the son of Daniel J. Cardwell and Frances Norris and first cousin of Susan E. Cardwell.
7. James P. Cardwell – born about 1849 in Grainger County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of Perrin Cardwell, his father, in the 1850 Grainger County, Tennessee census. James is living with his remaining family, after the apparent death of his father, in the 1860 Claiborne County, Tennessee census. James P. Cardwell is listed in the 1880 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. He is living between Daniel J. Cardwell and John Tilman Cardwell. Daniel J. Cardwell is his highly probable uncle and is the brother of Perrin Cardwell. John Tilman Cardwell is his cousin. James P. Cardwell is listed with his wife, Martha E. (Last Name Unknown) and young daughter. There is no additional record of him after that census. James P. Cardwell and Martha E. (Last Name Unknown) had the following children:
A. Mary L. Cardwell – born about 1878 in Grainger County, Tennessee.
8. Nancy C. Cardwell – born about 1854 in Grainger County, Tennessee. She is listed with the remaining members of her family, after the death of her father, in the 1860 Claiborne County, Tennessee census.
Perrin Cardwell is found in the 1840 Census of Grainger County, Tennessee, page 114: (Perrin Cardwell 100001000001-00001). Perrin Cardwell is the male listed as being born between 1800 and 1810. Eliza Norris is the female that is born between 1810 and 1820. The young boy that is born between 1835 and 1840 is Henry H. Cardwell. There is a man listed that was born between 1740 and 1730. That is probably a mistake on the part of the census taker. It is possible that the elder individual is Thomas Cardwell, probable grandfather of Perrin, but additional research is needed.
Perrin Cardwell is found in the 1850 census of Grainger County, Tennessee. He is listed with his wife, Louisa, age thirty-three. All of the children of this couple are established from this census record, with the exception of Nancy C. Cardwell who is found in the 1860 census. The 1860 census of Claiborne County, Tennessee finds the family without Perrin Cardwell, who has probably died after the birth of Nancy C. Cardwell in 1854.
Louisa Cardwell shows up in Grainger County, Tennessee in the 1870 census. Her son, William J. Cardwell, was killed during the Civil War. Henry H. Cardwell is living with his family is nearby, which leaves Louisa with the remaining children. Mary C. Cardwell Dyer is living with her mother, which is apparently after the death of her husband, Hubbard Dyer, possibly during the Civil War. Additional research is needed to determine if Hubbard Dyer died during that war or if the couple split up afterwards. Regardless, Mary C. Cardwell Dyer is living with her mother in the 1870 census. Elizabeth M. Cardwell is still at her home considering that it is one year before she is married to Samuel Brummett. Susan A. Cardwell is still at home and it is three years prior to her marriage to Ephraim Dyer. James P. Cardwell is twenty-one years old and living with his mother. The two younger children appear to be the sons of Mary or one of the other daughters. Leonard and Samuel are listed with Louisa in the 1870 census. Their respective ages are eleven and two.
