If you would like to contribute with an article of your own then send me an email with the specifics and I will be glad to add it to our site. This section has recently been divided to reflect the distinct lines that have been identified through DNA testing.

CARDWELL LINE I

John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN - This line is really starting to take shape. Recent developments in research on John’s parents have been solid and the connection with the known lines of the Cardwell family is proven. There is still more research to be conducted, but this is the most comprehensive research on this line that I am aware. John Cardwell was an early settler in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He was the son of George Cardwell and Leticia (possible Lee). George was the son of Thomas Cardwell and Martha Perrin. John was the brother of Thomas, Perrin, Francis, Richard and possible William Cardwell of the Amelia County, Virginia area. I’ve really been focusing on this family and have made some great strides in the last couple of weeks.. In fact, the page started getting so large that I had to break it into an article per each of John and Mary’s children. Just click on the link provided in the minute description of each child for a comprehensive family list.Updated 10 Dec 2006 click here for the complete article

Mary Royall, wife of John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN - John Cardwell (ca 1760-1824), one of the early settlers of Claiborne County, TN, was married to a woman named Mary. Her maiden name has been a point of question for Cardwell researchers for years, but recent research by Dorothy Bray has provided a solid, though unproven, link to the Royall family of Virginia. Check out Dorothy’s research in the article. click here for the complete article Added - 04Nov2006

James L. Cardwell: Son of John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN. ? - James Cardwell has be assumed as the son of John Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN by several researchers. An Unsolved Cardwell Family from Grainger, Union and Claiborne  Counties, Tennessee - In the mid-1980s, I started down the long path of researching my direct line of the Cardwell family. That line traces to Daniel J. Cardwell of Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee and has remained a brickwall. While attempting to link Daniel to one of the established Cardwell family lines, I slowly gained a better understanding of the family as a whole. Those efforts are reflected on the pages of this website and in the three books that I have authored on the Cardwell family. Daniel, and several other Cardwell ancestors in the same area, have yet to be linked to one of the established lines. The article contains information of Daniel J. Cardwell, Perrin Cardwell, Mary Eglantine Cardwell Hill, Nancy Cardwell Cunningham, Mary Cardwell Popejoy, (all of the Grainger and Union Counties, Tennessee area) and Thomas Cardwell, George W. Cardwell and Edward Cardwell of Claiborne County, TN. click here for the complete article Updated 04Nov2006

William U. Cardwell - Civil War Mystery Solved - he was the son of William Cardwell and Celia Harper of McNairy County, TN. Cardwell and Leroy Cardwell, I came across an interesting Civil War service record that solved the mystery. Click here for the complete article. Added - 24Mar2008

The Clarence Earl Cardwell Family Bible Record - This article contains the transcription of family records from the Clarence Earl Cardwell Family Bible. We appreciate Mr. Holbrook contacting us and providing this information for Cardwell researchers. click here for the complete record Added 13Apr2008

Brothers in the 12th Alabama Infantry, CSA - Two sons of Nathaniel Cardwell and Elizabeth LNU served in Company D of the 12th Regiment of Alabama Infantry, CSA. One died during that conflict and another other survived the war. This branch stems from Daniel Cardwell, son of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand, who died in Wilkes County, NC in 1813. His son, Peter Cardwell, married Elizabeth Harris and the couple moved to the Coffee and Pike County, Alabama region. This article concerns two of their grandsons from their son, Nathaniel Cardwell. click here for the complete article. Added - 24Mar2008

CARDWELL LINE II

Matilda Cardwell (aka Reddick): Family and Theories - This line has proven to be one of the most difficult and yet rewarding lines that I have researched. Matilda Cardwell has numerous descendants throughout the United States, but there were some dark family secrets that caused several of them to smack into the proverbial genealogy brickwall. Once that I was able to determine some of the truth, it opened up a flood of letters from researchers. Read the details in the article. click here for the complete article

CARDWELL LINE III

Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, North Carolina - We are starting the long task of documenting the family of this Cardwell family patriarch. This article will include fresh and ongoing research on the children of Thomas and Mary. It includes some information that is offered concerning Thomas’ connection to the root Cardwell families of Virginia. Check back often for new information as this research develops. click here for the article. Added - 14Dec2006

Thomas Cardwell & Obedience Thweatt of Dinwiddie and Halifax Counties, VA - This branch has received some of the poorest research concerning the Cardwell family. Allen Pendergraft made numerous assumptions on this line and his work has made its way into various databases, which include the LDS archives and numerous online sources that site his information as fact. It is not! Please research the line before jumping to the conclusions that were published by Mr. Pendgergraft. The biggest error in his research is that this Thomas Cardwell, as there were many by that name, is the son of Richard Cardwell and Susannah LeGrand. After exhaustive research it is apparent that he is not. Through the help of numerous Cardwell researchers, this line is slowly taking shape. Please contact me if you have additional information concerning this line. click here for the complete article

UNTESTED LINES

William Cardwell of Connecticut - This article includes ongoing research on the New England branch of the Cardwell family. William Cardwell served during the French and Indian War and had several children that lived in New England. I’ve been able to document a few of them as they moved west. I really need some help with this one. So, if you have any information concerning the New England branch of the family please contact me. click here for the article - Added 14Aug2007

Vermont Roots of the Cardwell Family - This research is on the group of Cardwells that were born in Vermont. Initial reseach has been on the children of Abigal Cardwell and her unknown husband. She moved to west from Vermont and settled in Dodge County, Wisconsin by 1850. Several of her children branch out from that location and are found in Minnesota, Iowa, and New York.  Some stayed in Wisconsin as well. Research indicates that Abigal’s husband, the unknown Mr. Cardwell, was born in Ireland. That would make him a more recent immigrant than the Virginia and New England Root families. If you are connected with this group please contact me. click here for the article - Added 24Aug2007

William Cardwell ~ Revolutionary War Soldier ~ of Culpeper County, Virginia & Bullitt County, Kentucky - This article contains an outline of information on William Cardwell, Revolutionary War Veteran, that was born about 1758 in the Culpeper County, Virginia area. He migrates to Bullitt County, Kentucky in the early 1800s. This branch of the Cardwell family has received very little research. William’s War service is well-documented and makes an interesting read to those that are interested in the Revolutionary War. Those records also provide some fairly good details on this family. click here for the complete article. Added - 12Dec2006

“The Bama Boys” - Cardwell Families in the 1850 Alabama Census - This article contains information about all Cardwell families in Alabama other than the lines of Peter Cardwell in Pike and Coffee Counties and James Cardwell in Tuscaloosa County. I will include those lines in the near future.  There are no other known Cardwells in the 1850 census other than those mentioned above and the ones outlined in the article. If you are connected to any of these families please contact the Cardwell Family Research Center with your information. There is a need for some serious research on the Alabama lines of the family. I’ve been attempting to place them into family groups, but need some assistance. If you are interested in helping with this research please contact me. From a cursory examination, the families listed appear to link to Simon Cardwell of Georgia, but more research is needed. click here for the complete article Added - 28Nov2006

The Cardwells of Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, Virginia - This article contains information concerning the early Cardwell families in Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, Virginia. It appears that some of these families were contemporaries of Thomas Cardwell and his wife, Martha Perrin. There are several lines that branch from the Middlesex and King & Queen Counties and there has been little research conducted to tie them into the known Cardwell family. Those lines include William Cardwell, Rev. War Veteran, that settled in Kentucky; Thomas Cardwell, that married Obedience Thweatt, of Halifax County, Virginia; and Thomas Cardwell of Granville County, North Carolina. More research is needed to determine their exact lineage, but research is pointing to the Cardwell families of Middlesex and King & Queen Counties, Virginia. click here for the complete article
