Anderson Cardwell - was born about 1785 in Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Cardwell and Mary LNU of Granville County, North Carolina. He is listed a minor (under 21 years of age at the time of his father’s death in 1799) in the 1805 North Carolina Supreme Court Case “Cardwell heirs vs. Brodie”. Anderson moves to Smith County, Tennessee with his brother, Caleb W. Cardwell. They are the only Cardwells listed in the 1820 Smith County, Tennessee census. Anderson Cardwell married Elizabeth Robinson between 1815 and 1820. She was born about 1803 or 1805 in Tennessee or Virginia and was the daughter of Samuel Robinson and “Frankey” LNU. In Samuel Robinson’s Will, dated 16 September 1825, in Smith County, Tennessee, she is mentioned as “Betsey Cardwell”. Also in that record,  her son, Joseph Cardwell, and other children (not listed by name). Click here for an abstract of Samuel Robinson’s Will. Several of the children of Anderson and Elizabeth took names from the Robinson line (Hezekiah, Samuel, Lemuel, Hudson). These given names are not historically associated with the Cardwell family, but are common within the Robinson lines of Smith County, Tennessee. They are listed in the 1820 Smith County, Tennessee census.

Caleb Cardwell had moved to Montgomery County, Illinois by the 1830 census and is listed in that county. Anderson is listed near his brothers, John G. Cardwell and Leonard Cardwell in that record.

Between 1840 and 1850, Anderson Cardwell moves to Macoupin County, Illinois. He is listed in the 1850 census for that county and several of his children can be established from that record. An examination of his childrens birth years and states of birth indicates that he moved to Macoupin County, Illinois between 1846 and 1847. His daughter, Susan, was born in Macoupin County, Illinois in 1847 according to that record. All of her older siblings are listed as being born in Tennessee.

Anderson Cardwell appears to have died between 1850 and 1860. He is not listed in the 1860 census. His widow, Elizabeth Robinson Cardwell, is listed in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census. She is listed in the home of Jameson Osborne. Living with her are several Cardwell children. More research is needed. Elizabeth is also listed in the home of her son, Hudson Cardwell, in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census records. The census taker transcribed them as Codwell in that record, but examination of the children provides proof that they are Cardwells.

 

The Children of Anderson Cardwell and Elizabeth LNU

1. Juda or Judith Cardwell -  born between 1815 and 1820 in Smith County, Tennessee. She is listed in the 1820 and 1830 Smith County, Tennessee census in the home of her parents. According to a descendant, Juda married Henry H. Cornwell in Smith County, Tennessee. Henry was born about 1815. He was the son of Fusher Cornwell Henry died at a young age, family tradition states that he was 26 years old at the time of his death, but that places his year of death in 1841. Considering that their son, Leanador Henry Cornwell, was born about 1846 in Smith County, Tennessee, it seems unlikely that Henry died in 1841. He probably died around 1846, but additional research is needed to be certain. Judith moved with her parents to Macoupin County, Illinois between 1846 and 1847. According to desceandants, she and her son, William Cornwell, died shortly after the move. They are buried in Macoupin County, Illinois, but the location is undocumented at this time. In a letter dated 28 December 1901, Leanador H. Cornwell states that he was born in Smith County, Tennessee in 1846. That he was too young to remember his parents and that he was raised by his maternal grandparents. Judith and Henry had the following children:

    A. William Cornwell - he died along with his mother shortly after moving to Macoupin County, Illinois. No additional information.

    B. Leanador Henry Cornwell - born about 1846 in Smith County, Tennessee. After the death of his father he moved with his mother and maternal grandparents to Macoupin County, Illinois. His mother, Judith Cardwell Cornwell, died shortly after the move and is buried in Macoupin County, Illinois with his brother, William. Leanador is listed as L.H. Cardwell by mistake in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census in the home of his maternal grandparents, Anderson and Elizabeth Robinson Cardwell. He is listed in the home of his uncle, Hudson Cardwell, in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census records. Leanador married Louisa LNUin about 1865 in Illinois. She was born about 1838 in Illinois. They are listed in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. Leanador and Louisa had the following children:

      i. William Cornwell - born about 1866 in Greene County, Illiinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

      ii. Mary E. Cornwell - born about 1868 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

2. Joseph B. Cardwell - was born about 1823 in Smith County, Tennessee. Joseph is specifically mentioned in the Will of his grandfather, Samuel Robinson, dated 16 September 1826 in Smith County, Tennessee. Click here for an abstract of that record. Joseph is listed in the home of his parents in the 1830 and 1840 Smith County, Tennessee census records. He is listed in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census with his own family. Joseph B. Cardwell married Amanda M. Lack on 30 November 1848 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She was born about 1831 in Kentucky. They are listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Macoupin County, Illinois census. They are living seperately in the 1880 Macoupin County, Illinois census. Amanda is living in the home of William Walton with her two youngest daughters. On 16 January 1886 in Macoupin County, Illinois, Joesph and Amanda are remarried. Joseph died before the 1900 census was taken. Additional research is needed. Joseph and Amanda had the following children”

    A. James A. Cardwell - born about 1849 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 and 1860 census of that county. He is not listed in their home in the 1870 census. No additional information.

    B. Demricus Frank Cardwell - born in September 1849 in Macoupin County, Illinois according to the 1900 gage County, Nebraska census. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1860 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. He is not listed in their home in the 1870 census. This needs additional research - D.F. Cardwell married Mrs. Nannie Cundiff on 07 October 1872 in Montgomery County, Illinois. She was born in January 1849 in Ohio. They are listed in the 1880 Montgomery County, Illinois and the 1900 Gage County, Nebraska census records. Frank and Nancy had the following children:

      i. Freddie Cardwell - born about 1875 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1880 census of that county.

William is not listed in their home in the 1870 census. He married Minerva Bingeman on 30 October 1881 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Minerva was born in August 1861 in Missouri. They are listed in the 1900 and 1910 Jersey County, Illinois census records. William and Minerva had the following children:

      i. Eva Cardwell - born in June 1896 in Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1900 Jersey County, Illinois census records.

    D. Francis Arabelle Cardwell - born about August 1857 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She  is listed in the home of her parents in the 1860 and 1870 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. Francis married William Douglas Hall on 22 February 1876 in Macoupin County, Illinois. They move to Ventura County, California and are listed in the 1900 and 1910 census records. Francis died on 01 February 1912 in Covina, Ventura County, California. Francis and William had the following children:

      i. Edith Lucinda Hall - born in June 1870 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She married Loren Volney Kennedy on 22 December 1892 in Ventura County, California. Edith died on 06 March 1926.

      ii. Ella D. Hall - born about 1878 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She married David James Poyer on 19 October 1893 in Ventura County, California.

      iii. William Alber Hall - born on 22 May 1877 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He married Alice E. Pidduck on 08 November 1902 in Ventura County, California. William died on 22 April 1951 in San Luis, Obispo County, California.

      iv. Jessie Belle Hall - born about 1882 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She married Albert Morris Starkey. No additional information.

      v. Estella V. Hall - born on 28 March 1883 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She married William James Robinson on 07 February 1904 in Ventura County, California. Estalla died on 05 June 1944 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. No additional information.

    E. Amanda D. Cardwell - born about 1860 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. She married Charles Henry Hall on 21 June 1884 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Amanda died on 17 February 1919 in Macoupin County, Illinois.

    F. Martha Ellen Cardwell - born in November 1864 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. She married Samuel H. Chapman on 24 November 1888 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Samuel was born in March 1842 in Illinois. They are listed in the 1900 Los Angeles County, California census records. There are two daughters that appear to be from an earlier marraige by Samuel. Martha and Samuel had the following children:

    G. George Cardwell - born in May 1870 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. In 1880, George is living with his father in Macoupin County, Illinois. George is listed as an Inmate in San Quentin Prison, Marin County, California in the 1900 census.

3. Martha Cardwell -  born about 1831 in Smith County, Tennessee. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1830 and 1840 Smith County, Tennessee census records, but is not listed with them in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. Martha married John A. Hanlin on 22 January 1846 in Macoupin County, Illinois. It is not record what happened to this marriage, but Martha remarried Charles Cole on 07 September 1854 (using her maiden name) in Macoupin County, Illinois. Charles was born about 1834 in New York. Martha and Charles are listed in the 1860 and 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. In 1870, they are living near her brothers, Samuel, John, and Lemuel Cardwell. More research is needed. Martha Cardwell was the mother of the following children:

    A. Leroy Hanlin - born about 1847 in Illinois. He is listed in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois as Leroy Cole and is living in the home of his mother and step-father.

    B. Jospeh C. Cole - born about 1859 in Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

      iii. Edith A. Cardwell - born in April 1895 in Illinois. She is listed in the home of his parents in the 1900 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    F. Mary Cardwell - born about 1872 in Illinois. She is listed with Samuel in the 1880 Greene County, Illinois census, but may be a granddaughter. She might have married Moses Mayberry on 23 November 1898 in Greene County, Illinois. More research is needed.

10. Allen Hudson Cardwell - born about 1834 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1840 Smith County, Tennessee and 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. Hudson married Mariah Ann Edwards on 24 July 1859 in St. Charles County, Missouri. Mariah was born about 1844 in Ohio. Hudson and his sister, Susan, appears to have married a brother and sister on the same day. They are listed in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois and the 1870 and 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census records. In the 1860 record, Hudson is listed as Head of Household with several family members in the home. His sister, Susan Cardwell Edward and her husband; his mother, Elizabeht Robinson Cardwell; Lenador Henry Cornwell, his nephew; John Anderson - born about 1844 in Illinois - relationship undetermined; Julis Pitchford - born about 1849 in Illinois - relationship undetermined.  In the 1880 census Hudson is listed as “Dock Cardwell”. From the 1870 census record it can be determined that they moved to Missouri from Illinois between 1865 and 1869. Hudson and Mariah appear to have died prior to the taking of the 1900 census. Hudson and Mariah had the following children:

    A. Laura F. Cardwell - born about 1861 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 and 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census records.

    B. Abraham Cardwell - born about 1866 in Greene County, Illinois. Twin of Jacob. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 and 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census records. Abraham married Martha Adams on 21 January 1884 in Hickory County, Missouri. She was born in 21 May 1867 in Hickory County, Missouri and was the daughter of William N. Adams and Dorcas Ann Blackwell. They are listed in the 1900 Linclon County. Oklahoma census records. Abraham and Martha had the following children:

      i. Lilly M. Cardwell - born in September 1886 in Hickory County, Missouri. She is lised in the home of her parents in the 1900 Lincoln County, Oklahoma census records.

      ii. Minnie Cardwell - born in May 1888 in Hickory County, MIssouri. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1900 Lincoln County, Oklahoma census records. She married Ira Nain Crisp on 05 July 1905 in Craig County, Oklahoma. Minnie died on 02 March 1985 in Potter County, Texas. She is buried at the Clayton Cemetery in Union County, New Mexico.

    C. Jackson or Jacob Cardwell - born about 1866 in Greene County, Illinois. Twin of Abraham. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Carroll County, Missouri census records.

    D. William Cardwell - born about 1869 in Missouri. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Carroll County, Missouri census. He is not listed with his parents in the 1880 census. May have died young. More research is needed.

    E. Albert Cardwell - born about 1872 in Carroll County, Missouri. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census.

    F. Minnie Cardwell - born about 1872 in Carroll County, Missouri. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census. She married a Mr. Langford and is visiting the home of her brother, Abraham, in the 1900 Lincoln County, Oklahoma census. Minnie and Mr. Langford had the following children:

      i. Ovla B. Langford - born in October 1898 in Missouri. She is listed with her mother as vistors in the home of her uncle, Abraham Cardwell, in the 1900 Lincoln County, Oklahoma census.

    G. Clara Cardwell - born about 1875 in Carroll County, Missouri. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Carroll County, Missouri census.

11. Hezekiah Cardwell - born about 1835 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1840 Smith County, Tennessee census, but is not listed with them in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. He is listed in the records of Round Prairie Church in Macoupin County, Illinois. According to those records, he was baptized on 15 October 1848 and was excluded on 20 January 1850 for dancing. His wife removed herself from the church on the same date that Hezekiah was excluded. Click here for the record. Hezekiah Cardwell married Kisiah Simmons on 24 June 1849 in Macoupin County, Illinois. This marriage did not last long, but produced one child. Kisiah remarried to William Scroggins on 04 June 1854 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Hezekiah appears to have served ias a Private in Company “H” of the 18th  Illinois Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He enlisted on 01 March 1865 and was listed as deserted on 15 September 1865. More research is needed to determine if this is the correct Hezekiah Cardwell (Caleb Cardwell, brother of Anderson, had a son by that name as well - both lived in Illinois.)  Hezekiah married a second time to Dorothia “Dolly” A. Sparks on 12 December 1855 in neighboring Madison County, Illinois. Dolly was born about 1837 in Illinois. They are listed in the 1860 Montgomery County, Illinois census. It is unclear what happened to that marriage, but I’ve yet to locate any of the children on later census records. Hezekiah remarried a third time to Mrs. Nettie Kepoo Daslauise Legout on 03 May 1879 in Madison County, Illinois. They are listed in the 1880 Montgormery County, Illinois census. Additional research is needed.  Hezekiah was the father of the following children:

    i. Lorinda Jane Cardwell - born on 15 April 1850 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She was the child of Hezekiah Cardwell and Kisiah Simmons. Lorinda married John H. Jacobs on 21 June 1866 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She died on 05 August 1922 in Macoupin County, Illinois. Click here for research on Lorinda.

    ii. Hester Cardwell -born about 1855 in Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents, Hezekiah and Dolly Cardwell, in the 1860 Montgomery County, Illinois census.

12. Lemuel Cardwell - born in May 1834 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1840 Smith County, Tennessee and 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census records. He is married in that record to Rebecca LNU. She was born about 1843 in Ohio. They are listed in the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 Greene County, Illinois. Lemuel and Rebecca had the following children:

    A. Elizabeth Cardwell - born about 1860 in Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. Elizabeth married William King on 03 September 1880 in Greene County, Illinois.

    B. Stephen Cardwell - born in February 1870 in Illinois according to the 1900 Greene County, Illinois census.       iii. Howard Cardwell - born in March 1897 in Greene County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1900 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    C. Sophia O.Cardwell - born about 1866 in Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 and 1880 Greene County, Illinois census records. She married Thomas N. Wallace on 28 November 1887 in Greene County, Illinois. They had the following children:

      i. Mary E. Wallace - born in October 1888 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her grandfather, Lemuel Cardwell, in the 1900 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    D. HudsonAllen “Bud” Cardwell - born in June 1875 in Greene County, Illinois according to the 1900 Greene County, Illinois census records. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    E. Josephena “Josie” Cardwell - born about 1873 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1880 Greene County, Illinois census records. She married Charles C. Goolsby on 18 March 1896 in Greene County, Illinois. They are listed in the 1910 Greene County, Illinois census records. They are living near Charles’ parents and one page from Josie’s parents. Josie and Charles had the following children:

      i. Harry L. Goolsby - born about 1898 in Greene County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1910 Greene County, Illinois census records.

      ii. Viola Goolsby - born about 1901 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1910 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    F. William Cardwell - born about 1878 in Greene County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1880 Greene County, Illinois census records.

13.  John Cardwell - born about 1844 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. He is listed as being born in about 1835 in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. He is living in the home of his brother, Samuel Cardwell, in that record. No additional information.

14. L.H. Cardwell - born about 1846 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. This might be a grandson. Lenador Henry Cornwell was born about 1846 in Illinois. He was the son of Henry H. Cornwell and Juda or Judith Cardwell. Judith was the daughter of Anderson Cardwell and Elizabeth Robinson. More research is needed, but Leandor is listed in the home of his uncle, Hudson Cardwell, in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census records.

15. Susan Cardwell - born about 1847 in Macoupin County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. Susan Cardwell married John M. Edwards on 24 July 1859 in St. Charles County, Missouri. She and her brother, Hudson, appear to have married a brother and sister on the same day. John was born about 1837 in Ohio. They are living in the home of her brother, Hudson Cardwell, in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census records. They are listed in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. Susan and John had the following children:

    A. Elizabeth Edwards - born about 1861 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    B. Arthur Edwards - born about 1866 in Greene County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    C. Eva Edwards - born about 1868 in Greene County, Illinois. She is listed in the home of her parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records.

    D. No Name Edwards - born about 1870 in Greene County, Illinois. Listed in the home of their parents in the 1870 Greene County, Illinois census records. Not sure of gender.

16. Judas Cardwell - born about 1849 in Macoupin County, Illinois. He is listed in the home of his parents in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census. This might be a grandson. There is a Julius Pitchford that is listed in the home of Hudson Cardwell in the 1860 Greene County, Illinois census records. It appears that the census taker made a mistake in the 1850 Macoupin County, Illinois census and listed some of the grandchildren as Cardwells rather than by their actual surnames. More research is needed.
